On this day, nearly three decades ago, the world mourned over the death of Grace Kelly from injuries she suffered after a grisly car accident. Let us go back in time and celebrate the colorful life of the beautiful Hollywood actress and real-life princess.
Born Grace Patricia Kelly, the American actress was born in 1929 to an athlete father and a model mother in Philadelphia. Kelly had dreams of getting into theater and started acting and modeling in her community at a young age. Pursuing this dream, she auditioned into the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York for an education in theater. Soon, she starred in some television programs and films, the most notable being Mogambo (1953), Dial M for Murder (1954), The Country Girl (1954), and High Society (1956), her last film.
Of course, who would forget her marriage to Prince Rainier III of Monaco, dubbed by the press as the “Wedding of the Century?” Kelly met the sovereign of Monaco in April 1955 when she headed the US delegation during the Cannes Film Festival. After a year-long courtship, Prince Rainier III proposed to Kelly, and she accepted. The beautiful Hollywood star shone even brighter on her wedding day, looking stunning in her elegant lace wedding gown designed by MGM’s Helen Rose. However, she left behind the Hollywood stardom after marrying the prince on April 1956.
On September 13, 1982, the princess was driving along a mountain road with Stephanie, her youngest daughter, when she suffered a stroke. The attack caused her to lose control over her car, causing it to plummet down the mountainside. Although she was still alive when she and her daughter were rescued from the accident site, Princess Grace was unconscious and severely injured. The next day, one of the most beautiful faces ever to grace Hollywood and Monaco passed away at the Monaco Hospital (now Princess Grace Hospital Centre), without ever regaining consciousness. She was 52.
Now, let’s say a little prayer for the lovely Princess Grace as we take a look back at some highlights of her life as a reel-celebrity and real-life royalty:
