Make Your Prophecy Finalist: Mark Drake

Congratulations to Mark Drake, one of the Make Your Prophecy Competition finalists! Read on to see his winning artwork and find out why he chose to represent the prophecy he did...

Name: Mark Drake
Country: UK
Lomohome: If you’re talking about on your website I don’t have one yet… If you mean where do my cameras live its usually in my rucksack, or on my mantlepiece!

Why did you choose the prophecy you chose and what does this prophecy mean to you?

No one seems to have time for anything anymore. Life is a massive rush and i’m all to easily caught up in it. But when I have got a camera in my hand something seems to change. Maybe it’s my excuse to let me stop and think for a moment. Maybe its the little window that lets me choose how I see the world. Maybe its just that I’m a man and i’m useless at multitasking! Whatever it is, for me my lomo doesn’t just let me, it makes me look twice. The world is amazing, I just don’t always see it on first glance.

Why did you choose to represent it as you did?

When it comes to the UK, it doesn’t get much worse than Middlesbrough. Unemployment is twice the national average and even if you have a job, you’ll get paid £6000 less than the rest of the country. It’s little surprise that it was voted the worst place to live in Britain. Statistically it’s hard to argue with the facts, If ever there was a test for the 6th prophecy ‘Boro is it! But when I took the time to stop for a moment, I experienced something very different. I wanted to show how there are many ways of seeing the same thing and none of them are wrong. Now I’ve even become friends with Middlesbrough’s local debt collector! Then again I was knocking on his door and if it was the other way round maybe I’d be looking at him differently.

What do you think would be a good 11th Prophecy?

I’ve too many ideas…

  • There’s a story in everything
  • Feel it
  • Make your future with the best bits of the past
  • Love your mistakes

but if i’m forced to pick one that I don’t think is covered by the current 10 prophecies it’d be ‘Show the world how you feel’

excellent entry! i reaaally liked it! it's exactly what the prophecy "look twice" means, which is the one i like the most. i also loved what the interview said, very real. it reminds me of my own supposedly horrible hometown i've learned to look at differently thanks to analogue photography.
great work Mark! too bad you don't have a lomohome yet, but when you do, let me know.

This movie is truly inspiring! really loved it! photography helps you see the other side of a supposedly ugly subject - finding such beauty and charm in the "worse place to live" is a triumph!!
