Midweek Movies: City of God (Cidade de Deus)

Released in 2002, City of God is a critically-acclaimed film set in a violent neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro. It tells the story of two boys and the different paths they chose to take as they grew older; one of them ended up as a drug dealer, the other a photographer.

City of God is based on a true story depicting the difficult and dangerous life in a Brazilian suburb called “Cidade de Deus.” Buscapé (aka “Firecracker”) is the story’s protagonist, quietly dreaming of being a photographer while struggling to live an honest life among his chaotic neighborhood – plagued by organized crime, drugs, gangs, killing, betrayals and love.
