In celebration of World Cat Day, I decided to share my analogue adventures with my mischievous yet purr-fectly paw-some feline baby, Momotaro the Siamese Cat!

Taking photographs of 4-year-old Momo is very much like photographing a restless child. One minute he agrees to have his photo taken, then changes his mind and runs away after another. If I want a good photo of him, I need to chase him around, coax him to pose for me, bribe him with treats (or a belly rub, a hug, or a kiss!), or stealthily follow him wherever he goes. Sometimes, the chase would bring me to places not fit for a photograph, like under the table, under the bed, along a dark staircase, or on top of closets and cupboards out of my reach. But, I never give up; as he’s one of my favorite subjects, I always feel the need to have him caught on film!
My analogue adventures with Momo began two years ago when I bought my first plastic fantastic film camera, a multi-colored Holga 120 CFN. I told him that he would be the first subject for my Holga, and I kept my promise!
I decided to play around with the colorsplash of the Holga, and it seemed like Momo was a bit hesitant to stare directly in the camera after the first shot because of the flash. Even if the photos weren’t really spectacular, at least they’re LOL-worthy! We started calling him “Ultra-Cat” because of these photos:
Several months and newly-acquired analogue cameras later, I find myself chasing Momo around as often as I can. Most of the time, I take advantage whenever I see him sleeping peacefully or lounging lazily by the floor or window. Thankfully, he’s used to quick picture-taking sessions and wouldn’t mind me flashing a camera or two in front of him. When he’s in a good mood, he’d even strike an interesting pose!
Here are some of my best film portraits of my feline son:
