Midweek Movies: Submarine

Inspired by our latest website feature - the MiniMovie - we bring you a new series in the Analogue Lifestyle section! Called the Midweek Movies, we will be introducing classic and fresh releases from the silverscreen every Wednesday!

For our first post, we’d like to tell you about Submarine – a coming of age movie based on a novel by Joe Dunthorne.

The movie tells the story of a socially-awkward fifteen-year-old boy named Oliver Tate. He’s faced with the usual teenage dilemmas – bullying, falling in-love and a troubled family life. His struggles to revive his parents’ disintegrating relationship, combat the taunting of his schoolmates and attempts to battle his frustrations in sex and love were presented in a charming, often uncomfortable montage of scenes populated with mixtapes, instant photos, handwritten notes and snippets from a Super 8 camera.

The film was produced by Ben Stiller and directed by music video director and Edinburgh Fringe comedy award winner Richard Ayoade.

I felt it was trying a bit too hard to be 'indie'. Rushmore wins for strange boy at school film,

My favorite movie of 2011 so far. It feels like Jean-Luc Godard directing a more straight-forward version of Rushmore.

Alex Turner made the BO. And just because of that, I really want to see that movie!
