Duran Duran reigned supreme during the 1980’s – they were certainly one of the most flamboyant bands during that time, and enjoyed the spotlight even if it meant dabbling in a bit of controversy. They hired fashion designers to build a signature look, making them the “prettiest boys in rock.” More interestingly, they were among the first bands to have their videos created using 35mm film movie cameras!

“Girls on Film” was released in 1981. The song opens with the whirring sound of a camera – a Nikon – which belonged to their band manager’s father.

The original music video gained controversy for its use of models in racy clothing and nudity. Watch the censored/edited version below:

It was speculated that the song was about the exploitation of fashion models; others argued it was about pr0n. What do you think?

    at the time I was around my 20's and I remember I liked to dance the song a lot and when I think to a song related to photography this one came always first on my mind. for the rest I live in the country where some kind of girls can also become government ministers so...no comment.

    I think if it was really about the exploitation of fashion models it probably wouldn't exploit women in its video...

    @superlighter - I have to admit - Duran Duran is pretty catchy (and a little cheesy ...)
    @ashdinosaur - yeah, ironic huh? ;)
