What you see is never quite what was actually there. Colors and contracts are false, light leaks erase parts of the scene. With time, photos - just like memories - can fade completely.
But with photographs, something can be captured that cannot be explained. A sense of nostalgia, a scent of someone you miss or a reminder of a friendship formed years, decades, ago.
DearPhotograph is a blog dedicated to these memories. Rather than seeing a photograph as just an image, they are seen as something more: a window or portal into a time that once was.
A glimpse into the past…
A photograph gives us time to stop for a moment and reflect. To think about all the things that have changed since we were young, but also to remember the constants in our life. People, buildings and even entire towns can change but there will always be something left, captured in emulsion, to remind us of a time that once was. It could be the family car that’s still there; now covered in rust and weeds growing out of the headlamps, that would take you to football practice on the weekends. Or a fence at the end of your garden that separated your childhood kingdom from the big scary world on the other side.
Whether the feelings invoked by a photograph or a memory of the the past are happy or sad, they should always be considered as a positive. It’s these emotions that remind us we’re alive.
So get out there. Capture those moments and create those memories, because years from now someone else might look back on them and yearn for a time that once was.
