Photographers of the 20th Century: Harry Callahan

Harry Callahan (1912 - 1999) was one of the most important photographers of the 20th century. He is considered one of the greatest innovators of American photography.

North American photographer Harry Callahan is recognised as one of the masters of the past century. His style was unique. His character, restless, humble and tough.

I can’t say what makes a photo. It’s mysterious. Open the shutter and let the world in. – Harry Callahan

In 1934 he began shooting as a selftaught photographer, by 1946 he was giving classes at the design institute in Chicago.

Callahan’s method of work was very particular, although there is little documentation in this regard, it mostly consisted of him leaving his house, camera in hand, almost every morning to walk around the city taking many photos. Later, in the evening, he made proofs from the best negatives.

in the same way that the roads, scenery and buildings of the cities where he lived were his absolute protagonists (demonstrating a strong feeling of line, shape, light and dark). his wife Eleonor and his daughter Barabra also appeared often in many of his instants.

He was not a photographer in search of the spectacular however, his technique of capturing a photo was incredíble in presenting landscapes as one element. He worked without pretense, in a simple way creating photos of unique, serene beauty.
