The Lomography Guide to Summer Music Festivals

The year is packed with awesome events all over the globe, so we've created this lovely little summer guide for you to pin-point the highlights of the festival season. Ladies and gentlemen, prepare your tents, wellingtons, bikinis, sunglasses, backpacks, sun lotion, friends, and Lomo because here we go!

Glastonbury, UK, 22nd – 26th June

The Glastonbury Festival of Contemporary Performing Arts held its first Festival in 1970 the day after Jimmy Hendrix died. Since then they have been going strong and have had a community growth with around 135’000 visiting in 2010. This year at the 5-day long 41st annual event enjoy diverse artists such as:

U2, Coldplay, Beyonce, Gorillaz, Vampire Weekend, MGMT, The Xx, Crystal Castles, Phoenix, The Filthy Dukes, Crystal Fighters, Snoop Dogg, LCD Soundsystem, Broken Bells, Empire of the Sun, Boys Noize, Chromeo, Simian Mobile Disco, Magnetic Man Live, Florence and the Machine.

Rock Werchter, Belgium, 30th June – 3rd July

Originally a rock and blues festival in the late 60’s, then a Jazz Festival in the late 70’s but things really exploded in ‘82 when 40’000 people stood at the Werchter Gates and wanted admittance to Belgium’s Biggest Rock Shindig: Rock Werchter.

Enjoy: The Chemical Brothers, Linkin Park, Queens of the Stone Age, The Hives, Warpaint, Kings of Leon, Arctic Monkeys, White Lies, PJ Harvey, Underworld, Magnetic Man, Coldplay, Digitalism, Robyn, A-TRAK, Iron Maiden, The Black Eyed Peas, James Blake, Kasabian.

Exit, Serbia, 7th – 10th July

This relatively young festival, happening since 2000 and having an average duration of 4 days takes place in an 18th century fortress by the Danube.

Arcade Fire, Pulp, Jamiroquai, Portishead, Underworld, deadmau5 (unhooked), Fedde le Grande, Bad Religion, House of Pain, Magnetic Man, Beirut, Tiga, James Zabiela, digitalism, Steve Aoki, Carl Craig, Marco Carola, Joachim Garraud.

Benicassim, Spain, 14th – 17th July

With 15 years of history and know-how this music festival offers a rich blend of culture:

Arcade Fire, The Strokes, Arctic Monkeys, Primal Scream, Portishead, Beirut, Friendly Fires, The Streets, Crystal Fighters, Paolo Nutini, Bombay Bicycle Club, The Go! Team, The Stranglers, Pendulum, Brandon Flowers.

Fuji Rock, Japan, 29th -31st July

Japans Largest Outdoor Music Event takes place at the Naeba Ski Resort in Niigata 8 hours north of Tokyo by car. It derives its name from the fact that the first event took place at the footslopes of Mount Fuji in 1997, although it has since moved from that location. Boasting an audience 127’000 strong makes it even more of an experience to groove to the following acts:

Arctic Monkeys, Asian Dub Foundation, Beach House, Best Coast, The Chemical Brothers, Coldplay, Digitalism, Four Tet, Incubus, The Kills, Manu Chao, Mogwai, Noah and the Whale, Queens of the Stone Age, Warpaint.

Sziget, Hungary, 10th –15th August

Held annually and considered one of Europes largest music and cultural festivals, artists traveling to Budapest this year to perform for you include, but are not limited to:

Amy Winehouse, Interpol, Crystal Castles, Bloody Beetroots, Kid Cudi, Deftones, Motoerhead, Judas Priest, Peter Bjorn and John, Pulp, Dizee Rascal, Skunk Anansie.

FM4 Frequency Festival, Austria, 12th – 20th August

With an array of popular music acts that are enjoyed by a wide and diverse audience, Austrian radio channel FM4 brings you:

Foo Fighters, Seeed, The Chemical Brothers, Carl Barat, Kasabian, The Kooks, Deichkind, Interpol, The Ting Tings, Kaiser Chiefs, Crystal Fighters, A-TRAK, Boys Noize, Moonbootica, Bloody Beetroots, Rise Against, Beady Eye, The National, Sound of Arrows.

Sonne, Mond & Sterne, Germany, 12th – 14th August

Creamfields, UK, 27th – 28th August

The UK’s finest and wildest electronic dance music festival, held annually on the August Bank Holiday. This year they are hosting:

The Chemical Brothers, Magnetic Man, Katy B, Tiesto, Calvin Harris (DJ Set), Diplo, Paul Van Dyk, Ferry Corsten, Eric Prydz, Sasha, Pete Tong, James Zabiela, Steve Angello, Dirty South, Benny Benassi, Boys Noize, Annie Mac, Erol Alkan and your usual Drum’n’Bass badasses: Andy C, Goldie, DJ Hype, Caspa and many more.

Bestival, UK, 8th – 11th September

This award winning 3 day boutique music festival is set at Robin Hill which is a lovely leafy country park in the heart of the Isle of Wight. The fun-loving people from Bestival bring you:

    Ooooh! Each to his own eh? Just got back from Hurricane Festival near Bremen in Germany, hopefully some of the 3 rolls I took will come out! And heading to Benicassim in Spain next month! And I just saw Red Hot Chili Peppers have announced a European Tour! Wooo!!

    i'll have a festival in my little city that weekend. amongst 4 good acts, there will be ludacris, akon, timbaland and deadmau5

    there are 14000 inhabitants and about 25000 visitors daily expected. haha.
    but besides that, i only go to hiphop festivals, since i cant hear any of that rock stuff... if you except hardcore punk. :D
