Flooding in the Prairies

Being in the flat prairies in the middle of Canada, and having a large amount of snow in winter. Flooding is a more than likely occurrence. Living on a farm with cows makes this a challenging time to be a farmer, but with great opportunities to take great photo's. I carry my Nikon FM SLR around all the time while out doing chores and just walking the land.

Being in the flat prairie’s in the middle of Canada, and having a large amount of snow in winter. flooding is a more than likely occurrence. Living on a farm with cows makes this a challenging time to be a farmer, but with great opportunities to take great photo’s. I carry my Nikon FM SLR around all the time while out doing chores and just walking the land. Being able to see your dog run away for three days does have an advantage though! Living in this place is beautiful in all season’s (even when it floods). Shooting in film really capture’s the feel of the prairie’s it connects you to the land in a way that only experiencing it you can feel and know.

The main problem with flooding at my farm is that there is no dry place to put the cows, This comes at a challenging time with the cows calving at this time of year (april-may). There are chores to do all the time and they range from spreading straw for the cows in winter, to putting out bails of alfalfa and hay for them to eat. Now is a fun time with baby cows everywhere! they are so cute and hug-able just got to make sure the mom is okay with it or she will chase you off.

People all over lower Manitoba Canada are sandbagging to protect their house’s and farms from the water. A small creek runs through my farm normally so small you can easily jump across it or wade through it now has become over 5-6 feet deep, and so wide it covers most of the fields. Causing damage that runs in the millions being prepared it the most important to avoid a major problems. Crews are working around the clock to help save people’s homes and farms and in my case cows.

Living in a rural place is wonderful and I hope can be experienced by all, at least for a little visit some time you may truly find a a magical place and feel connected to our land. or a least see some cute animals along the way.
