Leaving Winter Behind: Palm Beach

Whenever I need to escape the gray, frigid winter weather, I always hop on a plane and head down to Palm Beach, FL, where it's usually 80 degrees and sunny.

It was founded by Henry Morrison Flagler (who also founded Standard Oil and owned the Florida East Coast Railway) as a fancy resort town, and still has that resorty-feel today, which makes it the perfect quiet and sunny place to sneak away to. Though I like to spend most of my time on the beach or drifting somewhere on a boat, there’s plenty of other things for the more culturally-inclined…

The Flagler Museum is one of the coolest museums on the island. It used to be Henry Morrison Flagler’s house, and has beautifully restored period rooms to transport you back to analogue times. And the museum shop sells floaty pens.

In addition to the Flagler, Palm Beach has a number of other museums, like The Norton Museum of Art, South Florida Science Museum, Society of Four Arts, Ann Norton Sculpture Garden, and my personal favorite, The Palm Beach Photographic Center—which is home to the only Leica boutique in the US!

If you’re particularly lucky, you can find a friend with a helicopter to take you on an overhead tour of the island (helicopters + fisheye lenses = really cool photos).

And if you (somehow) tire of lounging on the beach, admiring all of the palm trees, and museum-hopping, there is still more to do, like checking out the galleries and fancy stores on Worth Avenue, eating at the old-timey Hamburger Heaven (where the people watching is as good as the food), and trying to sneak a peek at the crazy multi-million dollar mansions that fill the island.

But the greatest thing about Palm Beach is that there is absolutely no snow.
