Cannes Film Festival - La source des femmes

Our crew is about to leave Cannes after two weeks of madness in the Palais des Festivals. Before heading back to Paris, we have been invited to the official screening of "La source des femmes", directed by Radu Mihaileanu, and in the official selection of the jury for this 2011 edition.

This story takes place in a small village between north Africa and Middle East, where women are in charge of fetching water for the whole village, directly at the source, at the top of a mountain, and that’s the way it’s been since the dawn of times. Leila, a young married women, offers people to go on a love strike : no hugs and no sex as long as men aren’t fetching water to the village.

Before the screening, we have been lucky enough to see a tradtionnal concert on the red carpet of the Festival. When the director Radu Mihaileanu and the actress Leïla Bekthi came into the screening room, everyone stood up and applauded. It was really impressive, but it was nothing compared to the moment when the lights were turned back on at the end of the movie : 2300 people, standing up, and applauding for half an hour. The actress Leïla Bekthi couldn’t hold her tears, for the second time this night…

This movie definitely remembered eveyone about all the events and the revolutions that happened in the Middle East countries these last times, giving it a slightly different perspective. But even outside of this political context, this is a very moving movie, that we hope to see rewarded as it should be, with a Palme d’Or, maybe…

Here’s the trailer of this movie :

The Festival is reaching its end… We would like to thank MUBI , everyone else that we met, and all the people who made it possible for us to live the Festival from the inside. We’ve got lots of rolls to give to the lab, and we’ll show you some more pictures of Cannes soon. Stay tuned !
