Invading a Man’s World: Shaniqwa Jarvis

Perhaps Shaniqwa Jarvis’ photo exhibit titled “This Charming Man” is a reference to the famous song by The Smiths. But more than that, it’s her first major solo show where she shares the portraits of the men in her life—bearded, lanky, or stubbly. Now it’s your turn to pick.

Shaniqwa is a native New Yorker who moved to LA, and then London. Her exhibit is on May 5-20 in Londonewcastle Project Space.

If the other side of the world is busy tinkering with the cheeky boys present in the royal wedding, you can have the chance to explore the other side of relationships and character with Shaniqwa’s vision. She captures Jose Parla perched lopsidedly in his studio. She snaps a kid gulping mouthfuls of Coke and a guy leaning against a seemingly scorching wall with his hands dirtied with grease.

Here’s a girl who knows how to play it rough. She isn’t just one of the boys; she’s one of the men.
Inspiring not only both men and women, she represents cultural diversity. She shares in an interview with Evil Monito: “Being a black female photographer. Quoting Chris Rock, ‘Where some people have to walk, I have to fly’…I don’t whine about it, okay, maybe sometimes. I just know I will always have to bust my ass-I don’t mind it because it’s become my world.”

Like her, maybe it’s time for you to wear the pants.
