He and She, Randy and Erin: Inspiring Each Other Through Photographs

Randy and Erin are the brain-lovers of He and She Photography, a one-of-a-kind wedding photography service which makes use of a "natural light-lifestyle-fashion-photojournalism" style -- turning everyone else's love into art. Interestingly, they are also into film photography, especially when they're not working. Take a peek at their stunning shots and their inspiring words.

Erin and I are always chasing happiness, whether it’s in our day to day lives or in our business. We LOVE the energy of people who are laughing and having fun, so we love documenting that in our work. In our personal lives, we are into a ton of things outside of photography – music, design, hanging with family, and outdoor activities like hiking and camping help to provide an important balance in our lives. With a baby on the way, we’re super excited to include our son in these activities. We’re also really looking forward to the new focus he will undoubtably bring to our lives!

I would describe Erin and I as being very optimistic and goal oriented people, so those traits have certainly been driving forces in our business. A couple’s wedding day is typically the best day of a their life. It’s so awesome to be a part of that happy memory! Design, natural light and spontaneity are our driving forces during a wedding and make for exciting outcomes in our imagery. There’s a fine line between having artistic control in a photograph and leaving room for a spontaneous moment to take the photograph to another level. For us, it’s about having a vision while leaving room for each couple’s unique personalities to shine through.

Lines end up being a big focus in our photography. We thrive on composition, but we’re simultaneously looking for those moments of uncontrollable laughter that happen when a partner whispers a favorite inside joke in the other’s ear :) Our photography is a balance between design and movement.

We love the (often unpredictable) look of film. The idea that you never know exactly what will show up in the negatives adds another level of excitement for us. Light leaks and crazy solar flares that can’t be replicated truly set film apart. Sometimes the control we have using digital makes people feel their images have to be “perfect” all the time. Perfection can get stale. Unfortunately, due to the financial constraints of film, it doesn’t make sense for us to use it professionally right now, but we use it as much as possible in our personal work. Any road trip we take, you can bet we’ve got our Canon AE-1, Kodak Signet 35 and our Duraflex II in tow!

If we could have any (present) photographer take our first family portrait with our son, it would probably be our friends Nate & Jaclyn of The Image Is Found. Throw them a film camera in an untypical space and it will blow your mind! We also admire the work of Sally Mann, Margaret Bourke-White, David Hockney, John Pfahl and Max Wanger in no particular order.

For other couples that are into photography, I would say to focus on what inspires you. Really think about why those things inspire you and use those to photograph the way you want – not how someone tells you to. Photograph for YOU!

As another married couple who use film photography to document our adventures in life, we loved this piece. Beautiful photography, especially the lovely shot of Mom-to-be. Amazing light and what a beautiful moment to capture! Thanks for the inspiration.
