Twins' Lens Reflexes: The Pulleys' Photography

Kate Pulley and Amanda Pulley are lovely twins, not just biologically, but also photographically. They are the best of friends and together, they create whimsical photographs of each other. Let us dissect their conjoined photographic memories as we get to know them individually. Kate, blow us away!

Tell us something about yourself.
I am a demure 18 year old, currently living in middle Tennessee. But I would love to travel. (A lot.) I have a twin sister, who doubles as my model, and best friend. I love darkly-beautiful subjects, light, shadows, and old things!

How/When did you begin taking pictures? What was your first camera?
I guess I’d always been interested in takng photos, but I was especially intrigued by Polaroid photography, so my first camera (other than disposable and point-and-shoots) was a crappy new-modeled Polaroid. But I quickly learned authentic models, such as my Spectra system and SX-70, would produce better results for me.

Describe your style in photography. What are your usual subjects and themes?
I think my style is sort of a dark whimsy. I’ve gotten to the point where most of my portraits have hidden faces or semi-awkward poses, as the subject, sort of a delicate and strange glimpse of some story. My subject’s are nearly always my sister, hands, or bits of nature. Often times all three.

Amongst your numerous film photographs, which is your favourite?
Oh my goodness, this always wins the “most difficult question” award. I have different favorites, for different reasons. I could never choose just one absolute, it’s almost a series of favorites, that can change at any time. One that seems to merge my interests pretty well is this one. I love using shadows.

What is the soundtrack for your series of photographs?
My favorites, of course! Seabear, Sing Fang, Sleeping at last—you may see some of their lyrics scattered around my photo stream in captions. Though I’m always listening to new-found artists, their music is constantly inspiring to me.

We all have our idols, which photographers do you look up to?
Oh wow, I honestly couldn’t list favorites very effectively, but I’ll try. I come across new photographers and photographs amost daily. (You’d have to take a look through my flickr favorites!) I definitely look up to a lot of artists I’ve gotten to know (Shelbie Dimond, Ellie Niemeyer, Yuli Sato—all shoot quit a lot of film) I’m not even going to go through more names of everyone I look up to, that I’ve become friends with, as it would end up being longer than the following list!

But a few foreign photographers, off the top of my head, include Anna Ådén, bee_xlaura, Sasha Nikitin, geneviève bjargardóttir (for her pictures of Iceland), Lauren Treece, Jon Estwards, Iris Jans, and Elif Sanem Karakoç.

If you could take anyone’s portrait using film, can be living or dead, who (would it be), which (camera would you use), and why?
I know every girl probably says this, but definitely Audrey Hepburn, and (of any camera I possess) in black and white polaroid packfilm. She is just perfecty photographed; so timelessly classy and lovely. Some of my favorite black and whites are photos of her.

Come to think of it, if I could choose someone living [too], I would love to shoot Sindri Mar Sigfússon with my Polaroid Sx-70 and 600 film because it is my personal favorite combination to work with. He has a really interesting look and is one of my very favorite musicians.

Analogue vs. Digital. What makes analogue/film photography more special than digital?
Other than the aesthetic principles, I really admire the way you have to be so selective of your shot. You don’t have the option to take 100 mindless photos of the same scene, then go back and choose the one that came out best.

Do you own Lomography cameras? Which is your favourite? / Which Lomographic camera would you like to have and why?
I own a Holga, Fisheye, and Supersampler — which has become my favorite. Of the Lomography-branded editions, I would probably enjoy the Lomo Lubitel 166+. Although I know very little about them, I have been interested in Russian cameras for a while, and have been looking into getting one. Particularly a Zenit.

A lot of people are into photography today, what would you say to them to inspire them more?
Don’t let technology get in the way of your creating. You don’t need to conform to any standards that don’t fit into what makes you comfortable with your work and vision. Never try to change your style to fit someone else’s opinion of good art, because someone will appreciate what you are doing, and how you are doing it.

Do you have any ongoing/future projects?
Nothing set. But I am always looking for new faces and opportunities to shoot.
