SXSW through a Lomographer's Lens

When an entire city becomes the venue for a week long music, film and interactive festival, coinciding with Spring Break, you get a very large party. If you didn’t get the chance to go to SXSW this year, mark your calendar for next year, because it’s absolutely worth scheduling a year in advance.

SXSW is a weeklong music, film and multimedia conference in Austin, Texas, showcasing the independent alongside the mainstream, and taking away the distance between local and international. Many travel from far and wide to perform and partake in what Austin has to offer at SXSW.

Walking along the streets of downtown Austin, you couldn’t help but be surrounded by live music at every turn. There were what seemed to be impromptu parades and dances in the streets and a band of some sort on every corner.

One of the best parts of this amazing gathering was the opportunity for some fun street photography. Never have I seen so many people carrying around cameras, unfortunately most of which were digital. No one took any notice to my inconspicuous LC-A snapping away on the streets; practically in people’s faces, I managed to get some really candid shots.

Walking around the city, you are surrounded by all sorts of amazing street art. A mix of tasteful graffiti and commissioned artistry paints the city of Austin bright and vibrant. Keep your eyes peeled, because if you don’t, you’re liable to miss a work of art.

In addition to the festival’s core activities, local stores and restaurants set up shop all around. Tents and Markets were set up just about everywhere, selling anything from t-shirts to kitschy knick-knacks. There were also many food stands and trucks looking to serve those weary on their feet. That being said, you couldn’t go hungry and would most likely walk away with a souvenir or two.

I look forward to going again next year, and hope to see many more lomographers about. There were far too many digital cameras to be seen! Luckily I hear there is an Austin Lomography Store opening up, so maybe my wish will come true, hint hint.

Austin is the only city in Texas I like/love and the one time I went to SXSW I was working an event. :/ Will have to check it out again sooner than later.

Austin is where it's at! There's definitely some of us who love the celluloid, sorry you didn't see more of it!
