My 2011 Lomolutions

So this year celebrates the end of the first year of my venture into analogue photography, and as much as I've learnt a lot of things I should do (namely remembering to take the lens cap off, focusing my pictures, paying attention to the lighting situation etc) I have equally learned that there are a lot of things I really shouldn't do, and so here are my aspirations for this year to make it a year of pictorial perfection.

1. One of the things I have definitely learned, more recently, is the benefit of buying better film. A friend of mine was kind enough to buy me a stack of expired film for Christmas which included some b&w Ilford film which I’m so so so excited to use. Because I have a Holga 135BC, I decided that expired film would make for good photos so I picked up 10 rolls of Fuji Superia X-tra film.

Before this, I had been buying Kodak Colorplus. When starting out its probably fine but I started to realize how much of a difference decent film made. (I tried out some Ferrania film and loved it – it makes everything look so dreamy and soft, also had a random roll in a canister called u-boot but i had no idea what it was, pictures came out great though)

2. Secondly, I thought I would be really cool and try and take silhouetted pictures of trees when I shot my first ever roll of film down on the “beach/nature reserve” near where I live (Hayling Island). This is my first attempt, and it was such a massive fail, so disheartening.

I kind of realized this was because of the positioning of the sun, and it was the middle of the day, kind of stupid in retrospect… So when I went to France in the summer I tried again:

Success! So yeah, note to self: observe lighting conditions more, use flash when necessary etc etc

3. BE MORE ADVENTUROUS

So annoying when you see those amazing pictures people take with the same camera as you and you’re like sigh wish I could do that… I could, I just haven’t got that “be spontaneous, shoot whatever you see that intrigues you” intuition that makes for interesting or amazing photos, need to work on that! I’m thinking of using the colour gels for my flash a bit more though, even though the red one’s a bit weird, like infra-red film gone slightly awry..

4. Take more photos

I always come back from nights/days out thinking oh I wish I’d taken more photos. I get them developed and I’m thinking “I swear I took more photos than that?” so another wrong to put right is to get all those moments into photographic memory form, nice stuff to look back on in the future, or more photos to learn from mistakes from….

Happy New Year!

Nice post this. I've been in the game 3 months now. Interesting to see what your pics will be like in another years time.
