My Most Embarrassing Christmas Story

How many people know this story, you get stuck in traffic, or take a wrong turn meaning that you get to the airport after check in has closed. The people in their perfect little uniforms tell you you can't get on the flight. You protest because the plane is still sitting there, its a domestic flight and they haven't even started boarding yet.

My most embarrassing story comes from one Christmas when my Mum was dropping me at the airport and we showed up late, due in part to her taking too long in the shower, traffic and wrong turns. Most of my Christmas holidays started off this way, my father lived over 1000kms away on the Queensland Gold Coast in Australia and I lived on the New South Wales Central Coast.

This one particular time when we arrived at the airport only a few minutes late and were denied onto the flight, even though I was only 14 at the time and traveling alone the holiday rush seems to harden and enforce all border security types. My Mum has a bad temper and when you tell her that her only child will have to sit in the airport for over 8 hours and pay extra to get on the next flight when you can see the plane from where you’re standing in the small airport then that is definitely enough to cut her fuse and she started yelling, screaming, calling people names, then after being asked to leave by security she proceeded to grab hold of one of the Christmas trees there to try and lighten the mood of many travelers and throw it across the airport, sending baubles flying from their branches and to top it all off she stomped and smashed any of the ornaments that dare to cross her path while yelling at me to stop apologizing and stop trying to help pick up the tree/baubles/unbroken ornaments.

Its almost 10 years on and I will always get to airports at the recommended check in time.
