So This is Christmas... And Summer Too!

Christmas... It's snowing everywhere, children playing in the streets, families making snowmen and decorating, and carols are sung in front of the fireplace, right? Well, not really!

The word Christmas reminds us immediately images of Santa, Christmas trees, snow, happy snowmen, and plenty of food of course. But that’s not the reality worldwide. In fact, half the planet is experiencing the summer, and we can not forget this!

I live in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where Christmas is celebrated a little differently. Although the decoration of Christmas is the same as in the northern hemisphere, the weather is just the opposite. It’s funny to see snowmen on the lawn of a park where the temperature reaches 40 º C. And Christmas trees in a mall with a view to Guanabara Bay, one of the most famous scenes in Rio.

But the differences are not limited to climate. The celebration of Christmas can also be different. The Christmas tradition is waiting to open presents under the tree on the morning of December 25th (the
actual day of Christmas) and then there is a Christmas lunch with the family, and in some places they use colored crowns. But here at home at least we have a big Christmas dinner on December 24th and the presents are opened at midnight. So 25th is basically the day to lunch leftovers from Christmas dinner. Previously, when the family’s children were younger and still believed in Santa Claus (including myself), my grandfather would dress up and make bell noises, entering the house with a bag full of gifts. Our eyes sparkled as we waited for him to get a gift with our name from his magical bag….

Strange for you? Well, is not the traditional Christmas, but for me is a lot of fun!

Here we go. Some pictures I took this week before the Christmas. Sun… Beach… Sea… I can’t imagine a better place to be during Christmas! Snow? Blah :P

I’m getting bronzed these days…

I am from Singapore, located near the equator. There is no snow here and it's summer all year round! So we normally have a warm Xmas too! But this year it's been raining almost everyday and temperature is around 22-25 degrees C. Quite nice to feel cool once in a while.
