La Costeña Jalapeño Eating Contest!

Coney Island in Brooklyn, New York City, has long been a haven for thrill-seekers and Lomographers alike, keen to take in some of its weird and wonderful sights. It’s also home to one of the world’s oldest and most famous eating contests – the Coney Island Hot Dog Eating Contest! How many do you think you could eat in 10 minutes? 5? 10?! How about 68!?! California’s Joey Chestnut set a new world record, when in 2009 he stuffed down a grand total of 68 hot dogs and buns! Not something I would relish. (Anyone? No?)

Perhaps the most intense and formidable eating contest takes place every year in San Antonio, Texas. The La Costeña Jalapeño Eating Contest! It invites the world’s fieriest eaters to wolf down as many of these spicy peppers as possible. This year the winner, Chicago’s Pat “Deep Dish” Bertoletti, managed a mind-blowing 275 jalapeños in 10 minutes! I wonder how many glasses of water he needed afterwards? No mention of that!

World Oyster Eating Championship

Now, here’s one eating competition you really would need a strong stomach for. Every April, the world’s toughest eating contest aficionados descend on the French Quarter of New Orleans to take part in the World Oyster Eating Championship. Contestants must be willing to slurp down literally dozens of fresh, raw oysters to stand any chance of winning the coveted title of World Oyster Eating Champion! The world record holder is 43-year-old Sonya “Black Widow” Thomas who ate 46 dozen in 10 minutes in 2005. That’s 552 oysters in only 10 minutes. 55.2 oysters a minute – almost an oyster a second! Anyone else feeling queasy?

All-Japan Wanko Soba Eating Championship

The USA may be home to the majority of the big eating contests, but it certainly isn’t the only place to find them! Every year, the town of Morioka in Iwate Prefecture, plays host to the All-Japan Wanko Soba Eating Championship! Wanko Soba are a type of noodles that are very popular in this part of Japan and are typically served in tiny bowls which are filled repeatedly. Hatsuyo “The Witch” Sugawara holds the current record, after she slurped down a whopping 399 bowls in just 10 minutes! Check out this fantastic photo above of takezzo’s own experience with the legendary Wanko Soba!

What would you eat?

So, that leaves just one question: If you had to eat just one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?
