The Best of Both Worlds: Two Countries in One Frame

Returning to my birth country with a newborn passion for photography has led me to one exciting opportunity: catching two countries in one roll of film. Read on for my experience in reconnecting with my roots, analogue style!

I re-discovered the world of analog photography through a friend and from then, film photography has been a part of my continuous journey in interpreting my surroundings through the viewfinder. I moved from the Philippines to Canada with my family in 2003, and photography has helped me remember and capture my life as it changes right in front of me.

In 2008 I was able to go back to the Philippines for a short vacation. Armed with my LC-A, I roamed around the cities where I spent my childhood and teenage life; shooting everything that my eyes laid sight on. Time was running fast for me, as my stay there was brief.

Time may be short, but I was lucky to meet some people from Lomomanila. Jerome aka middlegrey and Jim aka stitch were more than gracious to share their passion for photography. Before I left, middlegrey gave me an already-exposed roll of Fuji Astia 100 and told me to use it to take photos of Canada.

Two years after that, I finally managed to re-expose that film. I was ecstatic. The result was not just mind-blowing as the colors and exposure went wild. The photos were also thought-provoking for me. I think that this roll, no matter how mundane it may sound to some, is special. It made me nostalgic and I think it is amazing that with the help of a friend, we were able to capture two countries that are so dear to me. Being able to do that through photography means a lot, and it is an opportunity that I would like to experience again.
