My friend vikingprincess

For this edition of "My Friend", panelomo introduces us to Princess Sally - a Lomographer from the Kingdom of Iceland!

There’s always an interesting story to every Lomographer – what would be your Lomo story?

I got my first Lomo camera (a Holga) as a birthday present. I had been interested in photography before, but when I saw the pictures on the Lomo website, something just clicked and I knew that these were the type of pictures I wanted to be taking.

What is the reason behind your Lomography username @vikingprincess?

I like to tell people that it’s a play on my name: the viking represents my surname Olafson and my Icelandic heritage and my first name, Sally, means princess. But really, I think it’s just because I’m a bit of a princess!

Why analog? Why not digital?

I love the images. I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately, after seeing a number of pictures taken with the hipstamatic app on facebook. I think for me, I like analog because it’s more unpredictable. The light leaks or vignetting are a result of the ‘faults’ in the camera, and no matter how long you spend at the computer or what apps you use, these images are easier to create on film. I guess it’s part of my process. If I double-expose a photo, it’s two shots in a certain vicinity. I can’t just choose my favorite two images and combine them in the comfort of my own home. I often use digital (my favourite is the very lomo-like vistaquest 1005) but I think that to create the images I want to create, Lomo is the only way.

Can you tell about your best Lomo shot. What, where, and why this photo?

At the moment my favourite shot is a double exposure of people walking across the beach in Minehead, England. I took this for a website my husband and I were working on with a ‘ghost’ theme. I like it because of the haunting shades of the black and white and the white line that goes across the bottom of the picture. I have no idea where this comes from, but we were able to incorporate it as an element on the website. One of those happy little accidents that turns out perfectly.

If you were a Lomo camera, what would you be and why?

I think I’d be a Holga, because I’m cute and fun and when people get to know me they’re always surprised.

What is your Lomo style?

I think I’m still working that out! I really like taking double/multi-exposures and I’m trying to put a little more thought into them, rather than just randomly taking two pictures… though that works sometimes!

The Lomography staff is reading this interview right now, and I’m sure they’ll be very interested in your suggestions – what else do you want to see in the “revamped” Lomography website? Your own lomowall in your lomohome, perhaps? Monthly free piggies? Anything! Remember… they are reading this right now.

I think they should work on developing the social networking element of it. I’d like updates on my Lomohome when any of my Lomo friends and people I ‘like’ add new photos. Maybe a better connection with Facebook, so when I add pictures to my Lomo home they get posted to my Facebook page too…. just because I’m too lazy to do it twice.

There’s a Lomo Legend that a long forgotten Lomo Genie Bottle is lying around the world somewhere out there. If you find this, you only get to choose three Lomo wishes – a Lomo camera that you currently do not own, any film of your choice, and your dream location. What camera? What film? And where in the world would you spend these Lomo wishes?

  • Camera: Horizon Perfekt
  • Film: Fuji Sensia
  • Location: a fun fair or amusement park, I don’t know where (maybe Euro Disney), just somewhere where there’s lots of colors and lots of people.

Hold on, there’s a fourth wish – who among our fellow Lomographers would you like to collaborate with for this “wish project”, and why?

This is really hard, there’s so many great Lomographers out there! I think satomi. She’s so talented and creative and I’d just hope some of it would rub off on me.

Just for kicks – - Does your Mom know that you like smelling films and that you’re into Lomography?
My Mom doesn’t understand. She knows I like to take photos, I own a lot of cameras and she even likes some of the pics I take, but I still don’t think she understands.
