LC-A Big Book Chapter 65: And What The Hell Does It Have To Do With Lomography?

68a. With the introduction of photography it was finally possible to keep the most precious moments for a lifetime.

The invention and development of compact cameras made everyday snap-shots possible and accessible to everyone. Advances in technology made cameras shrink and reduced their complexity, thereby making them easy to use for everyone. Furthermore, the development of material and automation of production allowed for cameras to be made available at comparatively low prices while maintaining the high quality of the photographs. It was at this point photography transformed from a calculated mechanical process into a process of human action. Previously the result had relied on the technical skill of the photographer being sufficient to operate the complex technical functions of the photographic apparatus. From then on cameras began to be manufactured with automatic mechanics. The photographer was freed from the mechanical constraints of the past and could now embrace the artistic part of photography. And that’s where Lomography comes into play: taking pictures should not be an interruption to your life, but part of it! The constant evolution of technology, important developments in the economy and the openness and awareness of society towards visual culture made it possible for everyone to carry a little camera in their pocket wherever, whenever. For the first time people did not have to worry about technical malarkey. They could simply be taken by the moment and let their individual perspective on art run riot. Don’t think, just shoot. We Lomographers celebrate the passion of spontaneous snapshots, the unique character and quality of analogue film and the perfect synthesis of these two factors that compact, easy-to-use and high quality cameras such as the LOMO LC-A+ offer us. Come and have a look with us at more than 100 years of compact camera history and see for yourself where the roots of our contemporary snap-shot passion lie!
