The Caviar Diaries – Chapter 9: Red Square – Black Caviar

Last chapter, we learned about red caviar. On this chapter, we'll learn about the black caviar!

Not only is some of the caviar red, but everything is red in Russia. Red is good, red makes the world go round. The true redskins live in Russia, not in the USA. So I took the Red Arrow to Moscow – the express train. I got my ticket very late and this made the overnight trip quite expensive. You are much better off if you book them in advance online, as that saves you quite a lot of money. Not only that, but when the ticket is expensive, the travellers are more boring. So there was not so much communication with my “sputniki”.

I knew already that I had to go to the Red Square, the Kremlin and the Saint Basil’s Cathedral. The plan was to make the connection between caviar and the most iconic symbols of Russia. This place is amazing; it served as a marketplace, as the coronation site for the Czars and as the centre for all the military parades of the Soviet apparatchiks. It was there where I met Daria aka Japsix (check out her LomoHome too!) for the first time. We didn’t go straight to the Moloko Bar, but had the most delicious ice cream in the GUM, the famous high end shopping mall located within the square. Prices have doubled and tripled in the past years and Moscow is now, without a doubt, one of the most expensive capitals of the world. But one can still find its niche. With a growing middle-class, the interest in Lomography is also growing in the homeland of the LC-A. Some of today’s most talented Lomographers live here and Daria is truly one of them.
