LC-A Big Book Chapter 79: Auto Focus Cameras Flood the Market

The Ronica CF35 AF hit the market in 1977 and was the first mass-marketed camera that featured sensors that automatically adjusted to the correct focus. Thus autofocus was invented. This function, which made photography a lot easier (but also a bit more restricted) and pushed the concept of `point and shoot' cameras to new levels, quickly gained large popularity amongst the public.

While the aforementioned manufacturers were busy producing the most compact camera ever, other companies were focusing on inventing new technologies that would dominate the amateur-photographer market for the next decade. The Ronica CF35 AF hit the market in 1977 and was the first mass-marketed camera that featured sensors that automatically adjusted to the correct focus. Thus autofocus was invented. This function, which made photography a lot easier (but also a bit more restricted) and pushed the concept of `point and shoot’ cameras to new levels, quickly gained large popularity amongst the public.

Several different models were introduced in the late 1970s and throughout the SOS. These models, coming mostly from Japan and China, increasingly incorporated other features such as automatic winding, built-in strobe flash units and reached its zenith with the introduction of zoom lenses. It was at this point that electronic point and shoot cameras replaced mechanical models as the everyman camera. While the electronic shooters developed at high speed, made photography accessible to literally everyone and transformed in the end into the digital models that we know today, the mechanical cameras that dominated the market until the late 19705 moved into the cult, professional and artist realms.
