LC-A Big Book Chapter 54: Lubitel 166, 166B and Universal

In 1976 and 1980, the Lubitel 166 and Lubitel 166 B were introduced to the market. The 166 was basically the successor of the long-serving Lubitel 2 and featured a more light-weight thermoplastic body and an automatic shutter cock.

In 1976 and 1980, the Lubitel 166 and Lubitel 166 B were introduced to the market. The 166 was basically the successor of the long-serving Lubitel 2 and featured a more light-weight thermoplastic body and an automatic shutter cock. The Lubitel 166 B was a simplified version of the 166; basically a Lubitel 2 with a thermoplastic body. The last update to the Lubitel series was made in 1983 with the Lubitel 166 Universal, which had some slight improvements and was produced until the 1990s. Besides the amateur and professional use of the Lubitelcameras, they were also used in a rather commercial way. Many LOMO PLC workers remember their beach vacation at the “Neva” Boarding House in Sochi, right by the Black Sea, very well. Besides their joyful memories of the LOMO PLC own therapeutic clinic, cinema, concert hall and library in Sochi, they also possess a photograph of them and their families relaxing at the beach. Quite surely this photograph was taken by one of many photographers that used their Lubitels to snap the sunbathers, quickly develop the film in a portable minilab and sell the images for a couple of Kopecks. By the way, Sochi has been elected to host the 2014 Winter Olympics and we definitely look forward to seeing some snappers using the Lubitel to capture the event!

63. Efim Kaufman, guide of the internal company museum, explains the company’s history.
