LC-A Big Book Chapter 36: LOMO LC-A+ Production Begins

It was now time for Mrs. Li and her team to set to work. Firstly, “Colibri Manufacturers” was established, which was made up of former trained employees from the Chinese “main camera factory” and were dedicated to the production of the LOMO LC-A+. Subsequently, an exclusive development and production contract was signed by the Lomographic Society in November 2005. The corresponding lens production agreements were checked with the St Petersburg LOMO PLC and then finally the top-class Chinese camera engineers began frantically designing the plans for the LOMO LC-A+.

LOMO LC-A+
The LOMO LC-A+ bears all characteristic qualities of its ancestor plus new features and improvements inspired directly by the wishes and suggestions of the global Lomographic community. The most remarkable new functions of the camera are a multiple exposure switch, enhanced ASA settings and a cablerelease-enabled button for long time exposures. This copy of a copy of a copy is now almost entirely produced in China. However, its soul, the famous Minitar 1 lens, is still manufactured at LOMO PLC in St Petersburg. The camera is produced by the Lomographic Society and ‘Colibri Manufacturers’. The LOMO LC-A+ was first released in September 2006. Since June 2007 there is also a LOMO LC-A+ with a Made-in-China Minitar 1 lens available. Needless to say the cleverly introduced Chinese copy of the Minitar 1 delivers 98% the same results as its original.

More than 20 original LOMO LC-A’s were disassembled, each one with more than 400 individual components. The necessary production machines for the manufacture of each individual screw etc. had to be constructed. People from LOMO PLC in Russia were very helpful and sent a 20kg package to the Lomographic Society, which contained the hand-drawn plans of the original LOMO LC-A. These plans merely needed to be transferred onto the computer and the various changes newly planned and drawn in.

46. Each LOMO LC-A+ is carefully assembled by hand.

After the planning work had been completed the detailed plans for the different manufacturing tools and procedures were handed over to China from which they built the production tools and manufactured the first prototypes of the individual components. The approximately 400 individual components of the LOMO LC-A+ are now produced in 15 different companies throughout China. In the meantime “manufacturing” was organized on the premises of the Chinese main camera factory, the appropriate equipment for assembly and quality control was bought and qualified employees from the camera industry were appointed and trained. Back in St Petersburg production of the Minitar 1 lens was restarted with a dozen workers.
