Agfa APX (35mm, 400 iso) User-Review

I had picked up a roll of this film for cheap and was saving it for the right time. I decided that I’d use it in my LCA+ as the first black and white roll of my diary. Rather than getting caught up in shots and finishing the roll in a couple days, I was very methodical and took my time shooting these photos; I ended up with a wide variety of settings, light conditions and content, and was amazed at this films ability to capture everything.

In my little experience, I’ve noticed that B&W can be particular with how much light it needs for specific results and good exposures. This film was extremely reliable and versatile. I’m sure putting it through the LCA+ helped a lot, and I’d definitely recommend that specific combination to anyone interested in giving this film a try.

My favorite aspect of Agfa APX was how it compared to other black and white films. Whereas I see a lot of very impressive shots that include blacks of new levels of dark and whites that are almost transparent, this film gave me more shades of gray than I had known possible. And the classic feel created was like stepping back in time. The couple of shots of my boyfriend and I in front of the fence are like scenes right out of the beginning of the Wizard of Oz.

I had so much fun with this film and especially like how well it worked for my LCA diary. It lends a nostalgic feel and adds a fondness to any moment you’d like to capture. Now that my mind has been opened to the full rainbow of black and white, I’ll definitely be including this film in my top choices from now on.
