MOSCOW MYTHS is Julija Svetlova's (a.k.a. neja) first Solo exhibition in the UK. Dopuble exposures shot on film using the double exposure technique with a variety of cameras, from the Canon Ae-1 to the Lomo Kompakt Automat the images are also cross processed to give vibrant and highly saturated colours. 10 July until 5 September 2010
In ‘Moscow Myths’ Julija Svetlova has found a way of photographing and reinterpreting the past as the present. Informed by her move to the West in her early adult years and her subsequent return visits to Moscow between 2004 and 2009, Julija has been keen to explore the current obsession with everything Russian.
From the decomposing remains of the Soviet Union, to Kremlin stars, fur hats and Rodchenko posters which are replicated as often as those of Che Guevara.
But what does all of this mean to people of the new Russia and the break-away states?
Julija presents us with a series of superimposed images that seem at first incongruent but on closer inspection, the multi-layering of images may cause us to re-think and challenge our preconceived ideas about the relics of the old regime.
Julija manages to fuse events from our common cultural past and combine them to suggest a new dialogue and a deeper understanding of the symbols of the former Soviet Union: often complex, full of irony and poignancy, especially when juxtaposed with the opposing face of Western consumerism.
Julija Svetlova grew up on the edge of Perestroika in Lithuania and is now a London-based Art Photographer.
