You love her, we love her but alas, just like most good things, our Vivian Maier tribute rumble has come to an end. But fortunately for us, the hard task of choosing the winners fell on the hands of one of your dear Lomography buddies, mephisto19! Check out his top picks now!
As the film photography enthusiasts that we are, how can we not develop a rumble dedicated to this special lady? With her eye for detail and straightforward approach to taking photographs, Vivian Maier definitely serves as an inspiration to us all.
While it was definitely a pleasure to go through all the lovely black & white street photographs that you sent in, the hard task of actually choosing the winners went to the capable hands of Lomography.com member, mephisto19 who we all know for his active participation in the site (51,098 photos, 73 awards, 130 articles…you get my drift).
So as this rumble’s special guest judge, what was mephisto19 looking for in picking out the winning entries? Well aside from fulfilling the basic requirements of the rumble (black & white, medium format), the rest he says, “was just a feeling”. He adds, “This rumble is not about tricks, funky doubles, extra lenses, and effects. For me this was about just spontaneously taking a clear street shot with Ms. Maier’s quirky sense of humor. This is what I see in her photographs, she is able to take everyday moments and make them special.” From people peering back at her, lovely architecture, shadows, and all sorts of shapes and forms captured exquisitely on film, mephisto19 only has one word to describe Maier’s style, “Beautiful!”
While he says that he enjoyed this rumble a lot and extends his congratulations to the five winners, this avid Lomographer has some tips for those who’ve yet to win a competition on the site: “What I realized is that many people do not read the submission guidelines. There were many color and/or 35mm submissions for the black and white, medium format street photography rumble. Even the tiniest elements to qualify such as the three tags, camera, and film were missing – a real pity for some!” Do be careful with your competition entries, people!
Moving on, he now shares what each of the winning photographs had that made him pick them out of the 952 entries that we received:
First of all, this shot from an-y shocked me in a positive way. I saw in it, what I was looking for, the humorous side of Maier’s photography captured in this light moment.
Another winner is vicuna with his couple on the bench. It shows one of those ordinary moments of a couple who might have been there for years already, sitting, looking around, and simply enjoying themselves.
mblair23 convinced me with that photo of a woman walking her dog and getting something up from the pavement. What I like about this shot is the fun element minus having to embarrass someone.
“Homeless and drunk” is the title of bmrawli’s winning photo, this, I believe, showcases another side of street photography – the homeless and poor.
Who has an eye for people in relation to architecture? It’s definitely megustastu, his shots are really good and it was hard to choose only one.
So to the five winners of this rumble, you’ll each get 10 fat piggies as your reward for making Ms. Maier proud. Congratulations! Don’t forget to give mephisto19 a big peck on the cheek too if you see him.
