You better do your stretching exercises as the great LC-A race is on!
The LC-A Race is on! Ever since we first announced this marvelous project we have been flooded with e-mails from Lomographers who wanted to be a part of this. We have also received reminders about the race, and we apologize that it has taken a little bit of time to get it in order. Since the original announcement we have seen a number of changes – please read on to see what’s new!
So now you’re probably wondering – did you make it? In the original post we said that there would be 4 teams of 25 people. We have modified this idea a little bit and instead present to you 10 (!) teams of 10 Lomographers each! We figured that we could make the race faster this way, and we hope that you agree! We have furthermore decided to group the teams according to their location.

We are sad to mention that not everyone can take part in this race. We limited it to the first 100 people who wrote to us. If you did not make it this time, don’t be too sad, if this race works out we will soon be launching a second one!
Now – the cameras will be shipped to the first Lomographer in each team. The package will include a list of the address to all other Lomographers in the team along with a LC-A camera, a GPS device, a notebook, and further instructions.
We expect the cameras to start arriving with the first team member sometime next week. Now before it does, there is plenty of time to read through the rules of the race :)
Rules
Once you get the camera you will need to do several things with the camera.
Film
At first we said that each person would take one picture and send the camera on. We have changed our minds (for the better!) and instead decided that you can take as many pictures as you want! You provide the film however (we will reimburse you – keep reading and you will see how).
Locations
Each team member needs to write up at least 3 Locations. From each participant we need a Location of the following theme:
- Urban adventures – a modern place of interest in a city (park, bus station, etc)
- Jewels of the city – a traditional place in the city (Church, square, bridge, etc)
- Night & Music Delirium – a nice night hotspot (bar, view, park)
Each Location need to be tagged with “LC-A race”
Of course you are allowed to submit more locations if you want! You will also receive the common 5 piggies per Location entry.
Locations have something to do with the prizes and winners of this race – keep reading to learn more!
Photos
Once the camera arrives we want you to take two pictures of yourself, this is before you shoot anything else:
- Mirror self portrait with the camera
- Self portrait with the cover of a daily newspaper popular in your city
Missions
We like missions. Do you? For each stage there will be a specific mission that all participants must do for their teams! What are they, you ask? They will be announced with each stage.
Camera Customization
The LC-A cameras that will travel the world are special indeed. We want you to brand them! Got a sticker? Something to write? Be sure to leave your mark on the camera – but bear in mind that there needs to be enough space left for the members getting the camera later! Remember – 10 people need to leave their signature!
We will then do something fun with the cameras once they are back in our office :)
Notebooks
We will also send out a Lomo Notebook with each package. Please document your time with the camera and we want you to get as creative as possible and go wild with it: drawings, poems, sonnets, the works! Here are some suggestions:
- Expectations of the camera before you begin to shoot
- An account of where you went with the camera
- Comments on the race and why you think that your locations are worthy winners
- Description of what you drew/wrote on the camera
- Advice to the next team members
- Do something creative with a few pages. Rule number 10 – “There are no rules!”
- Your profile, including name, age, location, Lomography username, signature, Lomography style
- Other ideas? Add it in there!
Above all, we want you to be artistic with this notebook and create as much artistic content as possible. At the end of the race we will display the notebooks in some form.
Photos
Once you have taken all your pictures you need to upload all your photos to your LomoHome. Please add an album called “LC-A Race” and tag with “lc-a race.” Be sure to mention that you used the LC-A camera, which film you used, what your location was any any other tag that you might find useful!
Time
In the original post we said that the first camera back wins a prize! Well, when we had a second thought about it and we realized that this would not be fair. We should not let the postal system decide who wins! As such, time is not a factor for this race!
But on the other hand we do not want this race to take too long! Hence we will divide the race into stages (a stage being one participant – hence the race having 10 stages). We want each participant to have the camera for 2 weeks to have enough time to take all the pictures that you need. Again, if you want to shoot 10 rolls of film – great, the more the better!
When we say 2 weeks this means from the time that you receive the camera until the time that you send it of to the next person.
In order to diminish the roles of shipping times in certain countries we ask that everyone send Ron an email once you have received the camera. Once Ron has received an email from all 10 teams the 2 weeks starts. We ask that everyone takes their pictures in time so that they can send of the camera to the next person once the 2 weeks are up.
Stage Winners & Grand Champion
Before you get too excited about the number of Piggy points that you can win with this race – remember that this is a team event and there is no “I” in “TEAM”!
Individual Stage Winners
We will announce a winner with each stage as judged by a Jury (See below). The winner of stage will be judged by the quality of their work:
- Number of Locations
- Quality of Locations
- Remoteness of Locations
If you do a good job we got 100 Piggies waiting for you!
The announcement of stage winners will take 2 or 3 weeks after each stage has been completed.
The winners will be picked by a Jury consisting of:
- stouf – winner of the Locations rumble
- ananditya – winner of the Locations rumble
- mattcharnock – The guy with the bright idea launch this race!
- silvergwen – Editor of the Locations section at Lomography
- cruzron – Administrator of the race
Grand Champion
This is all about teamwork people! Collective effort and camaraderie from all team members are needed to win the grandest of prizes. No showboating here!
- Based on combined team Locations – quality of output
- Logbook completion – are all the journal entries per participant complete?
- Customized Camera design – blow us away with your designs!
- 500 fat piggies divvied up by the whole team (50/participant)!
Each participant as well will additionally get 20 piggies added to cover the cost of film and development!
If you do a really good job you can take home 185 Piggies! (100 for the individual win + 50 for the group win + 20 for each participant + 15 for the locations). If you submit more locations you get more piggies!
Coverage
The race will be covered by stages meaning that once all teams have passed the camera on we will do a Blog post informing all teams and spectators of the progress. At the end will do a final post including interviews with the winners of the race!
GPS Device
Each camera will come with a GPS device attached to it. The GPS is accurate to 5 meters and will be able to plot the exact route of the camera on a world map once the race is done. Please be aware that we are not doing this because we want to track your every move, but because we though it would be nice to be able to show where the camera has been at the end of the journey. The device is not live and does not transmit any signal but rather simply stores information on the device that can be updated to a computer at the end of the journey.
Please take the GPS device with you wherever you go with the camera. If you do not the map won’t be complete!
Each participant must send Ron an email when they are done with the stage. This includes having sent of the camera, developed their pictures, submitted their Locations and sent us a statement mentioning their thoughts on the race.
In case the camera breaks
If a camera breaks the participant must immediately contact Ron. Ron will then see what the best possibility is for getting the camera replaced are depending on the situation.
We hope that you will enjoy this race as much as we do!
