In celebration of our new Diana F+ Glow in the Dark camera we’re getting familiar with her long-exposure capabilities and setting the scene a-glow with one of our favourite analogue techniques – light-painting!

Check out the Diana Glow

What you need:

  • A camera with a long time exposure setting (Diana, Lubitel, LC-A+…)
  • A light source like a torch (or many light sources)
  • A flash
  • Your imagination
  • An assistant or a cable release-like modification – as you can’t hold the shutter open and perform light painting tricks at the same time!

Method:

  • Think about the scene you want to create.
  • Set up your camera and the shutter setting to B.
  • Release the shutter and keep holding it open.
  • Use the light source/torch to paint the scene or write a word… the choice is yours. Remember to switch it off!
  • Then use one shot of your flash to delicately light the background of your shot.
  • Take your finger off the release lever to close the shutter.

Note: This is a basic method. With practice you will gain confidence to use more tricks!

Details:

  • Any analogue camera allowed
  • “Light-painter Picasso Award” on the homes of the top 3 winners (+ 10 piggies each)
  • 10 picture upload limit

I dont understand how to do this from the instrutions above, like the fish with bubbles coming out , how on earth do you do stuff like that? How come you can not see whoever painted the bubbles but you can see the fish. I am so confused!
