Marseille's Seaside

by champi
posted about 1 year agoI'm more a mountain boy than a seaside guy, I mean I like chilling on the beach, but I get bored after a few hours (not to say minutes)... But this seaside is different... First of all, apart for the artificial people-filled sand beaches near the town center, you will hardly find some sand around Marseilles but only limestone carved and sometimes even polished by the sea and the wind. And that's what makes it great to my eyes, the wildness of this rocky landscape diving directly into the green-blue sea, of the mistral wind which is quite always blowing in this place, and of the wave breaking on the rocks.

Boats

1 voteThe Mediterranean Sea is gorgeous - it has got the crossed water (not blue, not green - the "between" of both, like in doubles). So why not to discover it (the Sea) from the middle of it, ah? Well, you need to be a really good swimmer, or... need some luck to get to Marseille. The city itself is also so interesting, that you can even forget the plans of taking a trip with the boat in the Mediterranean Sea, so be calm and go straight ahead till you reach the old port, which is called Vieux-Port de Marseille.

Old Tobacco Manufacture

2 votesOld Tobacco manufacture, 'La Friche' is a huge complex transformed since 1992 into a multicultural concept. 500 m from the train station, it is a space of research, of production and distribution (broadcasting), completely dedicated to the contemporary creation under all these forms: entertainment (theater, dance, exhibitions, street entertainments), visual and digital arts, music, cinema... A ground opened as much for the artists as for the public. the best radio in town 'Radio grenouille' is spreading his program from there and the concert venue 'cabaret aleatoire' welcome the best current DJs and bands.

Island of If

by jogintas
posted about 1 year agoOne of the best known islands in the whole world - the island of If. I could not find the story about the island, why is it called like that - If. But one thing I know for sure is that this island is famous because of the Count of Monte Cristo. As you can remember the story of Alexandre Dumas, this Count was jailed there and the whole story is about how he tries to escape from this small island, where only the building of jail is located. I do not remember the exact amount of time, but I guess that he escaped only after several years (maybe 7 or 13) by digging the whole in the wall with the spoon.

Fish-market of Marseille

by azurblue
posted about 1 year ago40% of the fishes eaten by the French are farm fishes. When you'll go to Marseille, don't miss the traditional fish market that stands everyday on the Old Port (Le Vieux Port), on Belgian platform (Quai des Belges). The old fish-market (La Criée) has become the National Theater of the town. So, every morning, the fish-market takes place. The fishermen sell their fish on their own. They wake up very early, take fish (or not) from their nets, and go back to the harbor. Fresh, fresh fish! "Il est frais, il est frais mon poisson!" shouts the fishmonger.
