World's Most Embarassingly Large Parking Lot - West Edmonton Mall

by dirklancer
posted about 1 month ago
2 comments and 3 votesEveryone where I live just calls it "the mall" and no one wonders what mall is being mentioned. And of course, being in the centre of North American car culture, the mall comes with it's own SUPER parking lot.

2 comments and 3 votesThis month marks the 50th anniversary of the dedication of this 'modern' science facility that has already been closed for more than two decades..but the quaint building in its forgotten state intrigues me.

4 comments and 2 votesIn a land of meat-eating cowboys and oil rig roughnecks, you might not expect to find a restaurant whose claim to fame is their lack of animal products.

K-J Bowl, Edmonton

by dirklancer
posted 10 months ago
one comment and 1 voteI'm sick of constantly relying on my car to get to where I need to go, so I'm always on the look-out for interesting things to do in the neighbourhood close to home. This strip-mall basement bowling alley is a throw back to the 60s, and I've totally fallen in love with it. I've discovered that 5 pin bowling is something the whole family can enjoy - me, my wife, my five year old, and my 2-1/2 year old all have a blast at K-J Bowl.

2 submissions and 2 votesOK, so this isn't on the list of big attractions for the city with a massive indoor mall and tremendous river valley. It's probably not even any list of attractions for Edmonton. Nevertheless, there's a good chance you'll find me here if you stop by.

Edmonton City Hall

1 voteRight across the street from Sir Winston Churchill Square is the building where our mayor and city councillors work. It is actually a pretty unique looking building because the roof is made up mostly of two asymmetrical glass pyramids.

Sir Winston Churchill Square

1 voteSounds like a location in the UK, non? Well, our fine Canadian city _does_ have a fairly British sounding name... Sir Winston Churchill Square is nearly smack-dab-in-the-middle of the "Festival City", and many of our festivals and other events are held here. Whether it's to watch a family movie on a three-storey inflatable screen, or to take in the International Street Performers Festival, this is the place that Edmontonians gather to soak up culture.

Borden Park

2 votesMost Edmontonians speed past this gem of a park on their way to the Hockey Arena, Football Stadium, or the Horse races without even noticing it there, sitting so serenely in its familiar location for the last 100 years. Since I live only a few blocks from this park it has become a convenient place for me to walk, play with the kids, and snap photo after photo after photo.

The Grounds of Alberta's Legislature (Edmonton)

by dirklancer

2 votesAs expected, the Alberta Legislature is the site of serious business for the government of one of Canada's wealthiest provinces. But it is also a great place to find families picnicking and playing in one of the many fountains, community groups gathering to celebrate a multitude of occasions, lobby groups protesting something or another, and young men proposing marriage to their lovely ladies (as I did nearly 10 years ago).
