Ajaccio

2 votesAjaccio is situated on the west coast of Corsica, on the bottom of gulf of Ajaccio, between Gravona and the Sanguinaires Islands. This city was occupied for a very long time by people from Genoa and Corsica had no rights from citizenship there. They settled in the east of the city on the other side of Piazza of Olmo which is now the FESCH Street named after the famous cardinal Fesch, uncle of Napoleon and big art collector. Besides the Art Museum, Fesch gave his name to a lot of places, monuments and shops.

Calanches of Piana

1 voteOn the west coast of Corsica, between Porto and Piana, a narrow and tortuous road hangs on the edge of magnificent walls of red granite which fall straight into the sea... the famous - Calanches of Piana. Ripped and engraved by the erosion, they give the impression of a fantastic sculpture also by its specific colour - ochre. According to the legend Satan tried to seduce a shepherdess of the region, but not reaching where she was hiding, he became terribly angry. He sculptured a fantastic city. We can see it today by crossing or by going through creeks: the shepherdess and her husband, the dog, the bishop, and many other creatures...

Porto

2 votesTake the road which goes northwards along the West coast of Corsica and after passing the Calanches of Piana you arrive in Porto. Administratively, Porto is a simple hamlet which depends on the village of Ota, situated higher in the mountain. Nevertheless, if Ota is unknown, Porto, on the other hand, and its exceptional site transformed this small village into a highly visited place. Besides a factory of 'Nacre' jewelery, the small town offers numerous expeditions of diving and its colossal (very windy) beach of black pebbles offers an open view to the tower of Porto. It was probably built in the second half of the 16th century, before the appearance of the round Genoese towers. The tower of Porto is one of the only square fortifications built on the coast, the place of departure for the visit of the nature reserve of Scandola.
