Sant Miquel (Barcelona)

by vicuna

3 votesThe beach of Sant Miquel just at the end of the area of Barceloneta (and often called Barceloneta Beach), is one of the famous beaches of Barcelona. Sure, many tourists are going to this beach in the summer, and in the middle of the afternoon it's really full and difficult to find a place... But if you go there early in the morning (8.00 am or after 7.00 pm) or in the late afternoon, you'll have the beach almost for you alone :).

one comment and 2 votesTibidabo is a mountain 512 meters above Barcelona which boasts of spectacular views over the city. Not only is it known for its panorama opportunities but on it also resides one of the oldest amusement parks in Spain as well as a majestic church (Church of the Sacred Heart / Iglesia del Sagrado Corazón in Spanish / Sagrat Cor in Catalan).

Sagrada Familia

2 votesI haven't had so much experience with South-Europe so far. I was always more attached to the east and far-east. But Barcelona certainly changed my mind about what there is to expect from the south. I mean we don't even have to mention the food! I live with a Spanish girl and she constantly gets the finest oil and ham from her parents. And we don't have to mention the weather, I rather not, I live in Hamburg!

Sonar Festival

4 votesSonar Festival takes place every year in Barcelona, Spain for three days and two nights in mid June. It's a really cool and diverse festival with all sorts of musical styles and genres, with bands, djs, live sets, design, installations, stalls, audio visual and other multimedia....some of it is really cutting edge stuff. A complete mixture of big named, world renowned artists mixed in with far more niche and/or obscure and up-and-coming acts.

Nou Camp Stadium

2 votesIn the summer of 2005 we all went to the Nou Camp stadium in Barcelona for a visit. It was truly impressive - it felt quite a small ground, due to the way it is constructed, but the capacity is huge - 112,000. Unfortunately we arrived 2 days after the last game of the season, so we couldn't see Barcelona play.

Els Quatre Gats Restaurant

one comment and 2 votesEls Quatre Gats or 4 Gats (as its commonly known) sparked my interest after having read about it in a wonderful book called "Shadow of the wind" by a Spanish author Carlos Ruiz Zafon. The book was set in Barcelona so when I visited the city for the third time early this year, I made it a point to visit and dine in this famed restaurant. It opened in 1897 and was a popular haunt for Picasso and his mates. He apparently took on his first commissioned work by creating the front cover of the menu. This only peaked my interest more and sure enough, it didn't disappoint.

Castle of Montjuic And Hill

by vicuna

3 votesThe hill and castle of Montjuic is really a place to see in Barcelona and a place where you can see the whole city with a unique point of view. Dominating the south-west part of the city you have the whole panorama over it on one side, and on the other side you see the great industrial installations of the port of Barcelona. Climbing up the hill is also very interesting because of the park of Montjuic and the Olympic installations from de Olympic Games 1992 (and specially the Olympic swimming and diving pool... do you remember the diving sessions where the athletes jump in the air with the background of whole BCN and the Sagarada Familia?).

La Boqueria Market

by vicuna
posted about 1 year ago
one comment and 2 votesThe market of "La Boqueria" is a beautiful place in the centre of Barcelona, just located on the main Ramblas, mid-way between Plaça Catalunya and the seafront. Don't be afraid to enter in this crowded place, were the merchants are yelling around to sell their products (the best, of course) and where your eyes can contemplate fish & seafood, vegetables & fruits, fresh meat and a lot of other local productions of very great quality. Sure, that gives you hunger to see all this... in this case, go until the end of the market place, and before you come out, a little bit on your right, you'll found the "Bar de la Boqueria" who serves you all you want in typical specialities of Barcelona!! If you find a seat, take it quickly, a lot of people know this place, and once you're sitting at the bar, you don't want to leave the place until you've tasted a lot of the food you see under your eyes...!! Have a nice walk and a nice meal! And take pictures!! :))))

Sagrada Familia in night

by vicuna
posted about 1 year ago
3 votesThe well-known Sagrada Familia in Barcelona is perhaps one of the last great "century's constructions" of a cathedral, and like in the middle-ages the construction lasts for over then a century now (since 1882!!) and it's still not finished... If you want the whole story about the Sagrada, have a look at the official website (link below) but if you're in Barcelona, you must go visit the place, and the best moment for me is during the night! Until midnight, the cathedral lights are on, and the place takes a different face from the day, much more impressive, the shadows and colours of the light gives you the impression of a living beast in the middle of the city: it's alive!! Turn around the whole building and it will change its face, staring at you at every moment with a different face! :) It's a fascinating experience to visit this huge building at night, very different from the day (but it's very impressing at daylight too!) and gives you the opportunity to make cool pictures, of course!

Funicular

2 votesThere is just something about riding a funicular that brings out the child in me. I get all giddy with excitement as the slanted tram travels up a very steep slope normally with fantastic views along the way. This particular funicular was in Barcelona and is one of the two ways you can get up to Mt. Tibidabo (aside from car/bus-boring!) and is over 100 years old and is the first of its kind in all of Spain!
