Like everyone at Lomography today, I find myself overjoyed at seeing so many people around the world picking up an LC-A+. There’s this great feeling of unity in celebrating the 25th anniversary of this very special camera. I got a bit misty-eyed when I recalled the day I got my first LC-A, and how much it has meant to me. I hesitate to use such hyperbole as “an LC-A saved my life,” but the truth is, it kinda did.
My story is probably a common one. I had just broken up with the love of my life… a 10 year relationship that unraveled slowly before my eyes. It was a time when so much around me seemed to be crumbling, and I could feel a pull towards a dark time ahead. I starting looking for something new to distract me from the heartache. I stumbled on the Lomography website, and before I knew it I was buying up a bunch of cameras, hoping that a new “hobby” might be a way to channel my negative energy into a more positive place.
That’s when my friend arrived. My first LC-A. Fittingly, it is still the same LC-A I shoot with the most, even though I’ve had several LC-As and an LC-A+ since then. I found myself taking my new friend everywhere I went. I wandered around for years, shooting pretty much everything I saw. I found myself looking at the world in a new way, because I started to see pictures everywhere. I was simply snapping up the world around me… every beautiful thing, everything person I’ve loved, and every moment I wanted to save. I’ve put a thousand rolls of film through my cameras since then, and most of them through an LC-A. It was so much fun to see the world through my LC-A’s eye… and so much fun to be a part of the Lomography community that was filled with so many incredible people. Some of the best friends I’ve made over the past 6 years are people I met through commenting on lomohomes… bonds born from a shared understanding and love of this incredible camera that changed all of our lives.
Through the years, my LC-A has been with me through so many ups and downs. When my nephew was born and needed open-heart bypass surgery at 5 days old, I spent the 4 torturous hours waiting through the surgery by double-exposing pictures of him taken in his hospital bed with things that were full of life, in some desperate hope to overcome my grief. Seeing him grow up to become a 3 year old dynamo who plays baseball and tennis and rocks the air guitar morning till night has been the greatest joy of my life, and I hope to give him my first LC-A when he graduates past Lomolitos someday!
I wish all of you who have taken the leap today and picked up your first LC-A+ will experience just as much friendship and joy from yours as I have from mine.
Below is a collection of some of the pictures from my past 6 years with my LC-A’s. Here’s to 25 more years of friendship! Happy birthday dear friend!
