Okay, okay… The “G“ in “Holga GCFN” means that I don’t literally see my life through a plastic lens. This Holga has a glass lens. However, this Holga also brings out wonderful dreamy pictures with blurry edges and – of course – corner-vignetting. And because you get this typical Holga style, in my opinion the glass lens has an advantage over the plastic lens: the center of the image is clearer.
Actually it is not that complicated as you might think it is when you hold the Holga in your hands for the first time (probably also as your first medium format camera). Handling the roll films is very easy. You only have to adjust the distance mode on the camera and shoot! The pictures will become better and better with each film.
You only should be aware of the fact that the Holga can’t be used in any lighting conditions due to a shutter speed of 1/125 s and an aperture of f/8 and f/11. But that’s the cool thing: you have to grow with your Holga – learning and experiencing under which conditions and with which films you can use this camera. Finally, you and your Holga will become one.
In addition, there are also the flash (either white, yellow, red or blue) and the B-mode for experiments with different conditions. You will need a tripod or something similar when using the B-mode. In order to receive the full effect of the color flash you have to get close to your motive.
The two types of format of the film are the same like the ones of the other Holga cameras using rollfilm: either 6×6 or 4,5×6. I only apply the square format because in my eyes that’s the typical Holga-style.
Another plus is that a Polaroid back can be attached to the Holga.
And one last tip: don’t forget to remove the black lens cap …
