Built between 1969 and 1976, the Olympus 35-SP was the most technologically advanced fixed-lens rangefinder, using a dual metering system: spot and centerweighted readings. Consider the age this was a huge step in the manual use of the camera.
Besides that, the Olympus 35-SP has a 7 element five group 42/1.7 Zuiko lens that focuses down to about 0.85m (2.8ft) until the infinite (the lever is on the side of the barrel and its very functional). It use 35mm film, from ASA 25 to 800 (the film speed scale it’s in the side of camera).
My camera is the “always there” camera of my life! It belongs to my dad, which bought it from one of his brothers when he went to Guiné-Bissau in 1971. In that time, Portugal was in war with the colonies, but my uncle brought lots of cameras from there.
Anyway, now that we are peaceful, I appreciate the camera, because it’s so easy to work! Since child that I play with it and nowadays it became part of my present. I prefer making my pictures in daylight, also portraits and landscapes, for the reason that we can get high definitions using only the barrel rings. This way, we never take out the eyes from our beloved target for the picture. But with a tripod, night exposes produce very good images too.
So, if you look after a small, rangefinder and vintage camera, with an amazing lens and that it’s easy to work out, probably this camera, Olympus 35-SP, should be your camera!
