My LomoStory

And as the title says, it was indeed.

That was what it felt like in 2003 when I first pushed on the tiny black shutter release button of my first camera. But it wasn’t just any other regular camera. Besides being chrome (it was literally shiny that it doubled as a mirror), it had not just one, not two, but four lenses.

That was also when I fell in love with Lomography. Little did I know that walking past that now-defunct hobby store where I would see the Lomography Actionsampler on display will eventually result in me having a dozen plastic cameras six years later.

It was common to encounter raised eyebrows when I mention Lomography. I pretty much actually expected it. Soon enough, I was referred to as the Lomo girl among friends. That girl with the messy hair who always has at least one camera on her bag.

And why not?

To say that it’s so much fun is but an understatement. But I am at loss for words on how to describe the feeling of being able to shoot free of rules. So what if it’s oversaturated? So what if it’s blurry? So what if it’s grainy? With Lomography, you are your own artist. And you owe no one any explanation. It is what it is.

Fast forward to 2009: twelve cameras, hundreds of prints, countless rolls of films, and one exhibit later, I still find myself craving for more. I am no longer just the girl with the messy hair who always had a camera. I am now also the girl who continue to amaze people by introducing them to the wonderful world of Lomo. If you’re still not convinced, drop me a line. Perhaps we can talk it over coffee one afternoon.
