All you need is some light and a small hole and then like magic you’ll have yourself a projected image. This Tipster brings you the delight of the very basics of photography from the ever experimental community and Lomography team.
The World Inside a Box
The centuries old camera Obscura (literally ‘darkened chamber’) is our first optical Tipster that will get your imagination running wild when you see mandi and miriel view the world from the inside of their Obscura, a portable cardboard box!
All you need:
- A huge cardboard box (should provide enough space to sit inside)
- White packing paper
- Spray mount
- Duct tape
- Strong cardboard, ideally black
We are sure that you and passersbys will have a great time with this one.

A Room with a Special View
Another lovely and whimsical tip by miriel with that dreamy Obscura quality. This is a must try for anyone who has a room with good lighting.
All you’ll need
- Sticky tape, ideally black duct tape
- Thick black garbage bags
- Strong cardboard, ideally black
- Scissors
- And a room with a view (Works best in a small but bright room with a single window or a plain white room with just a door)
“…when your eyes get used to the dark, an upside down panorama will appear on your wall. Just enjoy the beautiful view or take some cool pictures with a tripod and a cable release.”

Sweeping the Horizon in a Box
nerdcist is carrying on the Obscura tradition with a hole lot of light! This time we’re going pinhole Horizon! While a little complex we think you will find the gallery form this tip quite impressive.
All you’ll need

- An empty roll of 35mm film with at least 1cm stub of film sticking out
- An empty plastic bottle

- A fine sewing needle or pin
- Scissors
- A sharp craft knife
As well, please heed the call to try this out for yourself and recommend some improvements, this one is an ongoing experiment!

Smena 8M Pinhole
Finally, community member dogma brings you a pinhole tip anyone can try if they happen to have a much loved but slightly defective camera about they would love to get back into action.
