lomodirk’s insane collection of LC-A’s
And his personal selection of shots from those Minitar-eyed wonders
But how and above all why so many of them? When I first came in touch with lomography I had reached a point where I was tired of my SLR. I was browsing different photo-sites and came across the LC-A. Pocket-size and a built-in exposure-meter which definitely exposes your shots all time right up to 2 minutes, wow, that`s looooong. Amazed by the possibilities and the colorful results of this little cam I just went over to ebay and four days later I had my first LC-A (the one with the dark brown leather) in my hands.
Getting deeper in the LC-A`s history I found out, that there are some with cyrillic labelling made for the russian market. Of course I needed one of the real russian ones. There was no doubt. Four weeks later this task was successfully completed. That was the gateway drug. I`ve been hooked on LC-A… Everytime I saw one of those weak little black beauties for a few bucks I felt sorry for them and gave them a shelter. I tried to do repairs to bring them back to life. Often it`s just a small simple problem which can be fixed at a maximum of half an hour. So the collection grew and more and more LC-A`s filled up my closet. The ones which I wasn`t able to fix went over to the buyout which just arrived in time. Thank you LSI! I didn`t feel bad about sending them in because I knew someone will care about and give them a new life as a refurb.
However, most fun of all are the little stories which came with the cameras. My girlfriend went to NYC for visiting a friend and I wasn`t able to come with her. So I bought one in good working condition on ebay for her to take it to NYC. Two days before she left the parcel arrived and – of course – it didn`t work. New batteries were run down after one hour. So I went on a nightshift and had some soldering on all contacts which had been loose. On the next day my girl went on her flight with a working LC-A. Today she doesn`t use it that much. A film needs almost a year running through it, but it is in use. On a local fleamarket I bought another one for two bucks, but there was no hope so it went to the buyout. Or imagine getting a LC-A which sticks like chewing gum…It took me almost an hour to demount it and wash all parts. But all parts which could be screwed on were still sticky like hell. So I gave them to a friend who is varnisher, he did some cleaning with acetone and gave it a silver paint. This one is now my double-LC-A. Oh, and there is a LC-A in almost new condition, I bought it as a broken one and guess what? One battery was inserted incorrect, just turned it around and it works perfectly, but this one has to stay in the closet.
So get yourself a LC-A refurb, a LC-A+ or even better: get both!!! Shoot day and night, take it whereever you go, use it with the wideangle lens, colorsplash flash, the ringflash, any flash you`ll find, take a splitzer and split your pictures, do multiexposures with yourself or persons all over the world. Slide, b&w or colour negative, cross process, shoot from the hip or use the viewfinder, don`t think, just shoot!
