Lomography's Russian Scientist examines the Fed 5

FED 5

Listen to me – this all-metal, all-mechanical Rangefinder demands one strict rule: Cock the shutter before turning the shutter speed dial! Repeat. . You wouldn’t want to mess around with this one – there is a possibility to damage the camera if this rule isn’t followed. It can give you super sharp pictures if you’re nice enough. Interestingly, the Industar 61 lens is Lanthanum-coated – making it slightly radioactive?! After some thorough investigation, we can all relax – this Russian beast is completely safe to use. Phew …

  • Born out of factory “FED” (Ukraine) since 1977
  • Selenium light meter.
  • Excellent contrast, resolution and sharpness due to Industar 61 lens
  • Amber coated lens minimizes undesirable flare.
  • Shutter speeds from 0.3-500/sec To infinity
  • Long-exposure function, plus Hotshoe feature.
  • Shutter speeds from 1sec – 1/500 of a second and “B”

Cool article. I LOVE my Fed 5. And just in case anyone was wondering, that funny dial on the front is a self timer dial and the button above it is how you release it. And I agree, if you take the time to love this camera it will give you love back.
