My Lomo Story

A few years ago, a friend of mine told me about Lomography.
“What-graphy?” I asked. She said it was a form of photography using film and toy cameras.
I didn’t get it. Until about 1 ½ years ago – when I stumbled upon lomography.com. So THIS was what she was talking about! The burst of colors… The saturation… The distortion… The square shots… The spontaneity…
I… Must… Have… More…
It was a trance. Every time I had a chance, I would surf the sites of Lomography.com and look at all the pictures and the cameras in awe. I wanted a Supersampler. No, a Frogeye. No, a Holga. Yes, my first camera would have to be a Holga. UGHHH! So hard to choose! At that time, I knew nothing about it and I couldn’t afford to have ALL of it. So I surfed more sites… Lomomanila.ph , Squarefrog.co.uk , toycamera.com What is this 120mm film? What makes the shots square? What is slide film? How do I load film into the Holga? How come it doesn’t stop when I wind the film?
I had so many questions! Even worse, I almost got discouraged when my first five rolls produced me… Only TWO good shots. And they weren’t even square!
Woe is me.
But if people around the world can come up with beautiful Holga shots, so can I.
So I shot some more. And asked some more. I joined forums (lomomanila.ph). I hung out with Lomographers… Until I got better… And knew more than enough.
Since my first Holga, I have gone through different toy cameras (even dug around thrift stores for ANY toy camera I could load slide film with): Vivitar Ultra Wide and Slim, Vivitar IC400, Fuji Instax Mini, Ansco Pix Panorama, Ricoh Half-frame, Fisheye2, Diana F+, Seagull TLR, Fisheye Sub, Lomo Krab (I live for the beach!) and of course, the Lomo LC-A.
I’m no expert but I now know enough about Lomography and its cameras. I then vowed to share all the information I know to all the newbies out there who needs answers. I was once like them, after all.
Fast-forward to the present. I am now part of the LSI web team and for months, I’ve been working on a soon-to-be-released top-secret project for Lomography! Hmmm… What could it be? You’ll soon find out :)
