My Lomo Story
written by weechonghooi on December 24th, 2008 , 13 comments (0 votes)

Hello everyone, my name is WeeChongHooi, but just call me Hooi. I was born in 1983, year of Boar in Chinese calender, and I come from a small place called Kota Bharu in Malaysia.

I was introduced into the world of Lomography in September 2007 by my best friend Dickwoei. It is weird to tell the story because I did not see what was pretty in Lomo pictures at first. The abnormal color on the pictures didn’t seem right to me at all, green color human skin? Purple color trees? Yellow clouds? Out of focus and fuzzy edges, etc. All of these were not right!

However, an ignition occurred and sparked my mind where I started to look at these in another angle. I see many special parts in them. There are so many surprises and magic in them than I ever thought and this fills me with excitement and happiness. Slowly, I got seriously in love with all Lomo pictures. Loving the unexpected weird colors, vignettes, blurry edges, Fisheye and Horizon distortion, etc.

From then on I stepped into the world of Lomography, and I have unintentionally collected so many Lomo cameras and accessories which I have totally no idea how!!!

I could still remember how I was feeling when I just bought a SuperSampler from the Lomography shop, the waiting part was unexplainable, the excitement was tempting. And the moment when i got my first Lomo camera in my hand was super awesome. Nevertheless, shooting my first roll was funny, I shot everything I saw and I liked using my SuperSampler. I didn’t think about the result at all. I loved the sound the SuperSampler tweet so much.

Getting my first roll to the lab was an unforgettable experience too, because I did not know what the result was going to be. Within an hour of processing and scanning, I ran home to check out my photos straight away, and WOW! was my first reaction upon those SuperSampler pictures.

From there the LCA+ came to my life, followed by the great Horizon Perfekt, and so on. Nowadays, I bring my camera to everywhere I go. I’m more than happy to make Lomo part of my life. I’m happy that I could shoot pictures without thinking. I feel so free that there are no rules applied in shooting Lomo pictures. I’ve learned so many different ways of living with Lomo, tips and tricks, different films or slides, all of which create special surprises each time. So today, I’ve decided to share my story here and would like to share all my favorite shots!
