My LomoStory by johann_affendy

Back when I was a social networking addict, I was always in search of new ways to edit my self-portraits; hoping it would spice up my 3.2 megapixel pictures. One day while scouring the Internet for tutorials, I stumbled across a Photoshop Action titled “lomography”. The writer had a before-and-after comparison of a normal photograph and the lomo version of that same picture. The outcome, although digitally manipulated, piqued my interest enough to google more on lomography.

This led me to the iconic Lomo Kompakt Automat, Holga, Diana and other
lo-fi goodness. The fact that lomography is fully analogue kept me at
bay as I believed I could just emulate the effects of most lomographic cameras with the before-mentioned Photoshop Action.

At some point later, during gap between classes, I was wandering alone in a local shopping complex just to pass the time. I saw this shop selling designer items and out of curiosity I walked in. To mysurprise, there was a shelf full of lomo cameras! The Fisheye Camera
(Fisheye #2 was yet to be released) stands out the most. Thinking I couldn’t emulate the effect of a fisheye lens, I wasted no time
purchasing my first lomo for the hands-on experience.

Initially I was on my own but then a college mate introduced me to Lomokids, a community of Malaysian lomographers. The timing was just right when I joined in; they were only a few days away from Lomokids Lomoday (which is a photo walk at a designated location). Although I
didn’t know anyone at the time, I went to the event anyway expecting a one-time deal. How I was wrong, not only I learned much more from the
veterans but I also gained a close-knit bunch of friends in the process. From that moment on, my passion for lomography intensifies with each passing day. Photoshop? Haven’t looked back since.
