Threadless Loves Lomography T-shirt Design Competition Winner!
written by ouroborosx on September 15th, 2008 , 27 comments (1 vote)

As you may remember, a couple of months ago, our friends at Threadless ran a competition called Threadless Loves Lomography where the mission was to submit a T-shirt design based on the 10 Golden Rules of Lomography. Well, the submissions came flooding in, and the level of creativity was simply staggering! The community voted, and from their top picks we had the task of choosing one winner who received $2000 in cash, plus a treasure trove of Lomographic goodies.

We are proud to present the winning design by Sebastian Guadarrama from Los Fresnos, Mexico. Congratulations, Sebastian!

Congrats to the winning design! Wow, it must have been hard to chose it among some many great designs (like my fav by reinert http://www.threadles(…)_Is_My_City)
Maybe next time you have some runner-ups too!

that is a very cool design... but a lot of people ignored the guideline we set out in the beginning not to have any branded imagery on the shirt... we weren't looking for a Lomography shirt, but a shirt inspired by the 10 golden rules... also, if you see the community voting, the shirts with the highest votes were pulled into a short list, and then the decision for the final shirt was made by a jury... so it was the best solution we could think of for how to pick... over 400 submissions was amazing, and it was so difficult to choose, even from the short list!

we think the winning design is pretty awesome... hopefully most of you will agree... :)

I don't like it so much, and don't really see how it represents the 10 golden rules... I've seen much better in the submissions... And I don't like white shirts!! Congrats anyway to the winner!!

hmph i was hoping for a design on a dark shirt, i love the idea, just not on white.

also : " not to have any branded imagery on the shirt" was one of the rules, but it seems to me that the pigeon is a prominent 'brand' of lomo - Staple's colorsplash cam and colorsplash flash. maybe i'm wrong, just an observation. i still really enjoy the design. :)

"also, if you see the community voting, the shirts with the highest votes were pulled into a short list, and then the decision for the final shirt was made by a jury... so it was the best solution we could think of for how to pick... "

According to the legal stuff on Threadless' site all designs "in the running" should have had a 7 days period of voting. I don't think I am wrong when I say that 70% of the designs in the running had hardly a 24 hours voting time. Consequently the chances of having a "good" vote and being in your shortlist were considerably reduced for many submitters...
Though I don't give a shit anymore about that strange, if not unpleasant, world of pseudo-designers, I'd be happy to understand why people who managed to get in the running, got kicked so quickly from the race...

I was pretty enthusiastic about the contest’s idea in the beginning, but quickly realised how far this was from the idea I have of Lomography and its overall philosophy. I almost felt suddenly very far from Lomography too... I'm glad I deleted my Threadless account before the end of that contest. I hope Lomography is not going on a trend that will convince me I should delete my lomohome too... but so far I can’t say I really like the way things are changing here… I joined Lomography because I found here some good roots and a great community (not the “community voting” on this contest...). I have more and more the feeling that these roots are being cut short… I did not subscribe to the Lomographic Society to have a Flickr or a Myspace account, on the contrary…

Anyway, rule no. 12: congratulations to the winner!

just for the record, there was a week of voting after the submission deadline... so all entries had a full 7 days of voting by default...

i'm sorry if some people are disappointed with the results of this competition... we are just trying to find interesting and exciting projects for you to be a part of... none of them are mandatory to participate in, and all of them are meant to be fun... :)

congratulations to sebastian, but this shirt isn't my favourite

it was a hard competition and it was not made for me as pure lomographer (without knowledge of photoshop/ design)
submitting one of my shots (with reduced colours) failed, so i had to figure it out
one came through (wow!) but only with the help of a friend who is studying design. i told him, what i wanted and he made it for me
seeing the shots that came through i was surprised, how many shots with brand names or lomo- cameras came through, and i guess that encouraged to enter more... i still don't know why they came through at all if the guidelines said that they cannot win anyways...
and i must say, shts have been kicked out very fast
lots of threadless userss wondered why there have been so many lomo- shirts (reading the comments) and gave low points
i have been really excited seeing that competition and seeing the prizes of course, but it didn't felt good to me, cause, as i said, i have no photoshop- skills and receiving mail after mail my designs will not be shown encouraged me
i would have prefered lower prizes and more winners

i hope to see more of the designs in the lomo- shop or a LOMO t-shirt competition here on lomography with lotso of happy winners

and thanks lsi for offering all these rumbles and cooperations (generally)

Congratulations Sebastian!
I find the original design, not too strong, and discrete. Many peoples have had a great idea. unfortunately we can not all win. I can imagine how the choice was difficult for the jury. I think every design is personal and reflects the personality we are. I think the t-shirt represents the hobby that we love. Let us be glad to share this t-shirt in the comunity of Lomography :)

...Well I think the Threadless competition was fantastic and I think the winning design is very good and a worthy winner - although like other people I'm never much of a fan of white t-shirts! (What's with all the pigeons around here recently though?! Seriously...)

The competition was meant to be "inspired" by Lomography, and not including branded items or cameras - so a lot of the designs submitted would have been immediately ruled out (although they may have been fabulous t-shirts). I think it's nice there was a link between Lomography and Threadless communities, and it's good (in my opinion) that the prize went to someone from Threadless (I presume) who now has a gazillion Lomo cameras to spead the love in Mexico. Although, yes, we all secretly hate him and are insanely jealous. The complete b*stard!

I badly wanted to join but since I'm part of staff I couldn't, aww. I kid...

I agree with Liad's explanation full-heartedly. There were a really good lot of designs but the Threadless culture really tries to imply only a subtle promotion of the collaboration since -forever- so it has to be fair on both our camp and theirs.

And well, congrats to the winner, too bad I was a week early ordering my threadless fix, I'd love one for my swagger.

I personally absolutely LOVE this design. I somewhat asked myself which rule it might apply to. I wasn't sure and thought, well, birds, flight, don't think, just, you know, shoot! Maybe along shot, but.... maybe this is completely off point, but in creative writing class, they will give you an "assignment" but they often don't mind if you stray completely from the original idea. The point is to get you writing. Maybe the same thing here? Maybe it doesn't apply strictly to a rule, but I think it certainly represents lomography in a very cool, modern, inspired design. That is just so cool to make a bird appear with nothing but film strips! Brilliant! I also didn't look at many other entries, but for this design, I approve.

I like the girls jeans, too...
