THREADLESS LOVES LOMOGRAPHY T-SHIRT CHALLENGE!
written by pan_dre on June 5th, 2008 , 30 comments (1 vote)

A little while back, an extremely friendly and brilliant website called “Threadless” contacted us with a collaboration proposal. As you might know, Threadless.com is a vibrant online community based on original graphic t-shirt designs – and one of the world’s premiere destinations for these slamming ink-on-cotton wearable masterpieces! Much like Lomography, the creative spark and soul comes from their hyper-active and far-flung community members, who labor day and night to produce the most unexpected and exciting work possible. Sounds familiar, right? We thought so too, and saw an excellent opportunity to cooperate on an amazing online challenge.

Ladies and Gentlemen – you are hereby called to put your design skills to the test! Using the “10 Golden Rules of Lomography” as a theme – we’re calling upon everyone & their brother to create the most devastating t-shirt possible. From all the submissions, ONE design will be chosen. This designer will receive a HUGE assortment of treasures (see the juicy details below) AND have their design printed in a large yet limited run for immediate purchase by the Lomography & Threadless communities.

For all you designers, artists, photographers, doodlers, scratchers, painters, stampers, and glass etchers out there: this is a primo chance to showcase your talent, take home a boatload of goodies (including a $2000 check! And $1000 in Lomographic merchandise), and create a priceless piece of wearable art for your fellow Community friends & friendly strangers. Read on for all the details.

SCHEDULE

The contest starts at this very moment! You’ve got four weeks to submit your design and five weeks to vote on the submitted designs of others. After that, the chosen design will be announced, printed, and available for purchase. Here’s how it works:

  • Thursday, June 5th – Saturday, July 5th
Competition is open and t-shirt design submissions are accepted
  • Midnight, July 5th – DEADLINE for submitting designs – During this challenge, Lomography & Threadless community members can vote for their favorite designs. Voting starts on the first day and runs for five weeks.
  • Midnight, July 12th – DEADLINE for voting

SUBMIT YOUR T-SHIRT DESIGN

As of this very second artwork submissions are accepted on Threadless.com. The link below has all of the requirements and legal bits. But to get you started, here are the basic guidelines:

  • The purpose of the submissions relating to this promotion is to create a stand-alone design inspired by the challenge, not a brand tee. Your design should not have brand names, the 10 golden rules or logos on it.
  • The selected design(s) will be chosen by a panel of Judges including Threadless staff and a representative from the promotion sponsor(s).
  • The design(s) to be printed will be chosen by the Judges within 45 days after the submission close date.
  • Use the submission form at Threadless.com by selecting Participate —> Submit Ideas from the menu – or click on the Link below to submit.
  • All submissions will also be eligible to be printed as a regular Threadless tee.
  • The submission must not be a design that has already been submitted to Threadless.
  • You may only submit up to three designs during the duration of the promotion.

WOW!!! This is really the biggest challenge ever!
damn it, I'm not so good at doodling in photoshop or so ;)...Maybe I do something on paper, scan it and submit it. I have to think about it...

photoshop is not required! there are no design limitations other than what is in the guidelines... as long as it can fit on a t-shirt and won't incite a riot (well, maybe even if it does), it's got a shot! :)

    as per the Threadless instructions:

    Download the submission kit
You will only need to submit a low resolution version of your design using our presentation templates. Be sure to keep your high resolution version of the design somewhere in case your design is picked!

    Create your design
Design your tee in a vector art program such as Adobe Illustrator®. Or, design in a raster program such as Adobe Photoshop®. If you are designing in a raster program, make sure you design actual size at at least 150dpi. When you are done, transfer your design to the template. If you are using the photoshop template, save off a copy of your design as a gif, jpg or png. If you are using the flash template, publish your file so that you have a swf of your design. Keep in mind, the file you submit is for presentation purposes for scoring. If your design is selected we will ask you for high resolution artwork.

    Submit your design
You will need to create a gif thumbnail of your submission. The thumbnail must be 100 x 70 pixels and under 10kb. When you have the files ready, and know what you want the title of your design to be, fill out the form to the right to send us your submission.

There is a submission kit with a template to use. Please READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY before submitting!! Very important, so you don't get disqualified for any reason.

    Good luck!

Brilliant idea! but man what a hard task! all ten of those rules! on one little t-shirt. those prizes are a real incentive but i cannot think of any way to get them all on there!

:-) who ever wins is brilliant!

no no no! please read the guidelines... the t-shirt should be INSPIRED by one or more of the rules, but SHOULD NOT include ANY rules or branding! In fact, if it does, it won't win! Just think of one of the rules, and let it inspire you to create something... but don't put any of the rules on the design!! :)

    wow
    amazing prizes
    cool challange
but i have no idea of using photoshop
i hope it is enough to submit a lomoshot itself to show the spirit of lomography including the 10 golden rules (and doens't fit ANY submission to rule #10 ???)

i have less then a month to learn the photoshop or other designer programs, because i have millions of ideas and only 1 technique - that's lomography, not art design... somehow can not stop thinking about the biggest prize - the honor to be published on the t-shirt, and of course money and cameras do count as well :) right, vicuna asked where can we rate or view the submissions?

Cool thing! Can't wait to see all the designs. :) I already have an idea for a design that actually works for three rules. Now I only have to figure out a way to bring it to paper...err screen (I'm bad at doodling and photoshopping).

and not a lomograph itself as it looks:

We want every design submitted to Threadless to have the best possible chance at being chosen for print. Your submission was declined because we feel your idea could use a little more work to be up to the standard that will give it the best shot. We have a feature called "Critique" on Threadless.com that allows you to have your design critiqued before you submit it for approval. By using the "Critique" feature as a pre-submission tool, you can let the community help get your submission up to par. We're certain this will help you improve your design! Check out the "Critique" feature at: http://www.threadles(…)it/critique.

"no cameras on the shirt... " <-- No cameras at all?? Or just no cameras that can be recognized as lomographic, like LCA, Holga and so on? What about a drawing of a camera without any logo or name on it?

It's important to read the rules and conditions on threadless. You can't use more than 8 colors on the design..
Like ferro_ud said, he organized a contest like this before on Flickr. My design was good enough to submit it to threadless, but threadless never excepted my design (so not good enough for them)..
So it doesn't mean if you design a t-shirt and it looks good, that threadless want to submit it to the gallery... and this is a big disappointed and demotivation for the designer himself.. not to forget the effort and time he/she spend on it...
When you look to other designs on threadless, you have to be very good in illustrator/photoshop or a good drawer..
