Film Labrats May
written by pan_dre on May 13th, 2008 , 5 comments (1 vote)

Welcome to the third installment of The Great Film Experiment! This is the part where we show you how messing around with film can produce mind-blowing results on your images! As always, our hard-working team of lab rats has been busy concocting some film recipes to suit your weird tastes! Today we present to you a fresh batch of new experiments to try, involving a handful of salt and a microwave. Excited? Then put on your lab coats and let’s get started!

Salt’n’Soak by Mandi

Ah, the wonders of salt. Adds flavor to your favorite dishes, disinfects your sore throat, and exfoliates dead skin cells off your gritty knees. With this experiment, Mandi presents salt with an amazing new function – it adds a crystal-like texture to your images!

Microwaved Polaroids by Alexeiz

Alexis Brien does more than shake that Polaroid picture – he pops it in the microwave for a cool, vintage-y effect! As easy as it sounds, he has stern instructions and precautions when conducting this experiment.

Infrared

“Infrared photography has always attracted fascination from the almost metaphysical notion of giving you the tools to capture the unseen and making it visible. Be it the white radiant plants or the black molten skies, the general color shift tints every scene with a dreamlike but somewhat hyper-real quality. Using a red filter, according to the sensibility of the film, allows you to cut away the visible lightwaves – just letting pass that arcane (and hidden) infrared.”

I'm just wondering if theres any thing you can do to 35mm film that will give it these effects while still being able to develop it? I've put it through the wash but that just melted the film, and the lab lady had a heart attack! I've resorted now to doing things to the actual prints, such as microwaves, toasters, ovens, irons and harsh chemicals.
