Last winter (Dec. 2011), a friend and I took a trip to Arizona. I thought I'd take my mom's old Canonet ql17 gIII and snap some pics, do something different. Little did I know, that the rangefinder would throw me head first into the world of analogue.

In every neighbourhood or district, there is a food alley or street famous for its restaurants and cafes that even non-residents also know about. For Singapore’s iconic Holland Village, I consider it to be at Chip Bee Gardens’ Jalan Merah Saga. Here’s why.

One of the very first films I tried after getting my Nikon FE2 was a curious one called Konica Minolta Centuria 400. Performing close to both Fuji Superia 400 and Kodak Ultramax 400, it was one of the very first films whose results I really liked. Unfortunately, I am not sure if I will ever get my hands on some rolls again.

In the summer of 1982, five buddies traveled to Copco Lake, California on vacation. They took a group photo while sitting on a fence, smugly showing off their pet cockroach in a glass jar. It was the beginning of a long-lasting habit of photography and friendship—going on the same trip with the same people and taking the same photo—which they've kept up for a solid 30 years! See their "bro-mantic" evolution in photos here.

One word: Gelati. Two words: Mango Gelati. Three words: Best when cold. Four words: I want one now! In my opinion, Jacksonville Beach isn't family friendly. Too many college age and homeless bums hang out at this beach. There are so many cigarette buds on the ground. My fear is that I'll step on broken beer glass in the sand. And a friend of a friend almost got raped while out jogging in the morning. I avoid it.

While on summer holiday at our friend's family cabin in Cape Breton, Canada this year, I happened to be looking through the drawers to find a place to put something and came across an old camera in a box. It had sat there for 20 long summers and winters, forgotten, until this little Lomographer came to stay, poked through some draws and got it developed.

We all shoot our films, some of us also process and scan it, but I prefer the convenience of the commercial labs for the purpose. Guess my surprise when I got totally different scans from the same roll!
This GIMP tutorial covers the basic technique that I used to rectify the problem on one of my first home-made Redscale rolls. Although a digital computer and a software program is used, I do not consider that a manipulation, but rather "fixing" an error that has been made by another computer program elsewhere. We are going to analyze the histogram and based on some basic knowledge about film and exposure, we are going to get the redscale film to look like it was originally intended.

I had bought a roll of Rollei Nightbird in 35mm some months ago and I was saving it for a special occasion. In early July I had the chance of spending a weekend in Paris and I just focused mostly on taking photos. I loaded my Lomo LC-A+ with this film roll and gave it a try. These are the results and my feeling about it.
